There has been a fair bit in the news recently about twitter, some praises but mostely dismissals about its future.
Yesterday at the Morgan Stanley technology conference in San Francisco, Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google praised Twitter’s growth and success to date, while at the same time dismissing it as a “poor man’s email system”, and adding that, as far as instant messaging goes, people use services like Google’s Gmail Chat.
I’m not sure that Eric get’s twitter all that well. Its not an instant message system at all and it is certainly not an email system but I think it works well at bridging the gap between instant messaging and e-mail. The problem with instant messging is that it is exactly what it says ‘instant’ and it take’s time out of your...

There’s a lot of buzz in the online PR world about social networking, whether that be traditional social networks like Myspace and Facebook or social networking through microblogging services such as Twitter.
Should you jump into social networking to promote your business? And if so, with so many options available, how do you choose which social networks to participate in?
Benefits of Social Networking
I’m not much of a supporter of diving into every new or large social networking environment or fad to promote a business. However, social networks do have some benefits that make them worth considering as an addition to your online PR efforts:
1. Social networks and microblogging services can serve multiple roles with a single tool. For example, you can network with colleagues,...

Mobile, Email, IM, Bebo, LinkedIn, Facebook, even Twitter. Technology allowed us to connect with more people outside our traditional social groupings and allowed us to stay connected with all these new people. The bonds might not be as strong as those bonds with close friends and associates but each connection still taxes our time. Now we connect with people via email and IM and we’re adding more and more to those lists. MSN for years had an upper-limit of 150 people you could add. If you wanted to add anymore than that you had to cull your list. They got rid of that a few years ago and I think I have about 250 on my MSN list now with another 250 on Yahoo! IM and AIM. If I sign into Meebo now (which manages all my Instant Messaging accounts) I get a few messages from people straight...

I’m motivated to write this post because I don’t think the main message behind my previous Facebook post was understood by a few people. This is probably because my marketing oriented posts are sometimes being read by techies who assume I’m talking about technology. It’s very possible that I’m not great at expressing my opinion well enough for people to understand my madness. I’m certainly not saying that everyone with a different opinion to me didn’t get the point!
Whilst I referred to technology, I was in fact (in this instance anyway), talking about a discrete form of marketing using technology called Facebook.
One size doesn’t fit all
I’ll be more direct this time. Facebook can be used effectively as part of an integrated digital...
