WORK HAS begun on a project to cover over the Dart line, install semi-mature trees and improve pedestrian access between Dún Laoghaire’s town and harbour.Part of an overall upgrade to “the metals” walkway, Crofton Road and Marine Road, the Dart line is to be covered, ending a traditional disconnect between the Pavilion area and the harbour. The plan is to create a new walkway over the Dart which currently travels through a cutting south of the railway station. The intention is to define the metals as a place for pedestrians and cyclists by creating new café terraces, paths, sitting areas and a small play space.A new footpath along Queen’s Road and additional crossing points have been designed to integrate the scheme into the surrounding area. A pedestrian crossing at the entrance...

Yay, Ireland's premier architecture festival has arrived! Ever wanted to be on top of the world? Or at least the top of the Dublin world? You can do it this weekend
Open House Dublin is on from today 8 October to Sunday 11 October, opening doors ordinarily closed to the public – including the roof terrace on Liberty Hall which is where I’ll be headed on Saturday morning
Liberty Hall was Dublin’s first skyscraper, built in 1965. It will be open on Saturday and Sunday 10am–1pm with the last tour at 12.40pm. The tours will run regularly on a first-come basis so get there early. I’m really looking forward to seeing the view from the top, the highest I’ve been in Dublin is the Gravity Bar in the Guinness Storehouse. The Guinness Storehouse and Factory will also be holding tours over the weekend though...

This weekend sees buildings selected for their architectural quality and interest open their doors to the public.
Now, in its third year, Open House Dublin has grown from strength to strength and is the only event which successfully promotes public awareness about the built environment, and uses buildings and the spaces in-between to inspire an audience to interact with their surroundings.
Our topical and diverse programme includes stunning private residences, landmark public buildings, eco-conscious apartments, award-winning civic offices, contemporary cinemas and art spaces, historic monuments, as well as the essential civic infrastructure of schools, libraries and community centres, rounded-off by tours of Dublin Airport and Dún Laoghaire’s historic East Pier Battery. To explore our...
