Friday’s Forgotton Favourites - Junkster via 2 U I Bestow, Nov 20th, 2009 at 20:15

image Way back in '97 and '98 there was an Irish band called Junkster who made really good electro indie music not a million miles from the current music of Alphastates. They released one good 'self-titled' album, two good singles and opened Slane in 1998 for the likes of The Verve, Robbie Williams and James. Strange that with the limelight shining on them for those two years that there is very little online about the band! Here's what I found;Junkster were Deirdre O'Neill [Vocals], Aidan Lane [Guitar], Mick Creedon [Guitar], Graham Darcy [Bass Guitar] and Donal McPartlin [Drums]. According to their last.fm page; "Junkster produced exceedingly laid back, melodic Irish alternative rock. Deirdre O’Neill has a classic Irish voice, complementing the chill rock of the rest of the band."In 1997 the... Similar posts

Friday’s Forgotton Favourites - NPB via 2 U I Bestow, Feb 26th, 2010 at 17:12

image We heard the sad news about Paul Clancy RIP, who died in his sleep last week from a heart attack at the age of just 34. Paul was the drummer with NPB [National Prayer Breakfast] and recently was writing music for his solo project called 'Clancy'. National Prayer Breakfast released three albums in their lifetime and consisted of Patrick Freyne (guitar/vocals), Paul Clancy (drums) and Daragh Keogh (bass). After the departure of guitarist Pol O'Conghaile, they added new guitarist Jeremy. I got their album from 2000 entitled 'The Sociables Prefer Pop Music' and it's a super album of quirky indie pop songs. They were a well respected band in the local music scene. Feeding FrenzyLove Your NeighbourLegacy:Patrick Freyne is fast becoming one of Ireland's best media journalists with his album... Similar posts

Friday’s Forgotton Favourites - Blink via 2 U I Bestow, Feb 19th, 2010 at 20:37

image Blink were a pretty good band in their day. Their day was in the early 90's with the release of their strong debut 'A Map of the Universe'. It was in that same electronic indie genre of Jesus Jones, EMF and The Soup Dragons. Blink in 1992 were the first band in the world to be featured on a phonecard! Well that's according to here! [see below]Blink were: Dermot Lambert: Vocals, GuitarBrian McLoughlin: Bass GuitarRobbie Sexton: Guitars, Keyboards & VocalsBarry Campell: Drums & Backing VocalsLove MeGoing To NepalBlink did release album number two in the US in 1998 called 'The End is High'. It took two years to be released in Ireland. In 2004 they had a revival of sorts by releasing 'Deep Inside The Sound Of Sadness'.Legacy: Blink built up a decent following and released some great albums.... Similar posts

Friday’s Forgotten Favourites - Revelino via 2 U I Bestow, Sep 11th, 2009 at 21:08

image Since the closure of the excellent Irish Music Central site I'm really struggling to find information about the best Irish bands from back in the day! Revelino were moderately successful. They made it onto John Peel's radar, according to Hot Press journalists the band had the third best single released in 1994 and they had their music featured in the movie 'I Went Down'. They were also the Irish band who displayed their Beatles influences very clearly in their music and sound. Revelino were Brendan Tallon, on Bren Berry on guitar, and Shane Rafferty on drums. Joining them were Alan Momntgomery on bass and Brendan’s brother Ciaran on guitars. They first appeared on the Dublin gigging circuit in late 1994. Their first album was released at the same time which was voted the 47th best Irish... Similar posts

Friday’s Forgotton Favourites - Compulsion via 2 U I Bestow, Aug 28th, 2009 at 12:49

image Compulsion's album Comforter was the first time I realised that an Irish band could produce music on a par with everything else I was listening to at the time. I think it was when Pearl Jam's Vs album was on repeat play in my teenage bedroom that Comforter found a home in my life. They were a punk influenced indie alternative act who probably suffered from the 'sound like Nirvana' tag! Here's some background info: In 1992 Compulsion was formed by Joey Barry also known as Joseph Mary. Joining him were Sid Rainey and Garrett 'Jacknife' Lee, all of whom had played together in Thee Amazing Colossal Men. The band recruited Jan Willem Alkema from Holland on drums. The Compulsion EP was released in 1992 while in 1993 the band released two more singles before Comforter was released in 1994 with... Similar posts
