We heard the sad news about Paul Clancy RIP, who died in his sleep last week from a heart attack at the age of just 34. Paul was the drummer with NPB [National Prayer Breakfast] and recently was writing music for his solo project called 'Clancy'. National Prayer Breakfast released three albums in their lifetime and consisted of Patrick Freyne (guitar/vocals), Paul Clancy (drums) and Daragh Keogh (bass). After the departure of guitarist Pol O'Conghaile, they added new guitarist Jeremy. I got their album from 2000 entitled 'The Sociables Prefer Pop Music' and it's a super album of quirky indie pop songs. They were a well respected band in the local music scene. They made it onto John Peel's radar, according to Hot Press journalists the band had the third best single released in 1994 and they had their music featured in the movie 'I Went Down'. They were also the Irish band who displayed their Beatles influences very clearly in their music and sound. Revelino were Brendan Tallon, on Bren Berry on guitar, and Shane Rafferty on drums. Joining them were Alan Momntgomery on bass and Brendan’s brother Ciaran on guitars.They first appeared on the Dublin gigging circuit in late 1994. Compulsion's album Comforter was the first time I realised that an Irish band could produce music on a par with everything else I was listening to at the time. I think it was when Pearl Jam's Vs album was on repeat play in my teenage bedroom that Comforter found a home in my life. They were a punk influenced indie alternative act who probably suffered from the 'sound like Nirvana' tag! Here's some background info: In 1992 Compulsion was formed by Joey Barry also known as Joseph Mary.
