Cold Souls – A Film Review via No Ordinary Fool, Nov 18th, 2009 at 00:00

image The theatrical manner in which magicians perform their tricks has a twofold benefit. Firstly, it entertains the audience and entices them into a world where cynicism can be suspended for a time. Secondly, it keeps them distracted long enough for the magician to engage in the necessary sleight-of-hand for the trick to work. In Cold Souls, writer-director Sophie Barthes looks to employ a similar technique. Here, she draws the audience into a world where a company that claims to be able to extract a customer’s soul, store it, and replace it any time provokes only mild incredulity in its potential clients. On the other hand, when the cape is finally pulled away from around the bird cage, the latter frustratingly remains empty. Put another way, there is no time given over here to providing... The Father of My Children – A Film Review via No Ordinary Fool, Mar 11th, 2010 at 00:00

image A workaholic father who gives new meaning to the concept of being a “weekend daddy” may sound suspiciously like the idea for some cloying Disney film or other. However, this bold and striking work from young French writer-director Mia Hansen-Løve is definitely a horse of a different colour. Introduced to the audience as the middle-aged chain-smoking boss of an independent film production company, her protagonist Grégoire (charismatically played by Louis-Do de Lencquesaing) negotiates Friday evening traffic heading out of Paris as he deals with a myriad of colourful work-related problems on his mobile telephone. One detour later, he is at home with his brood of lively children and a loving wife in Sylvia (a somewhat stand-offish Chiara Caselli). However, work never seems to be far... Similar posts

Still Walking – A Film Review via No Ordinary Fool, Feb 2nd, 2010 at 00:00

image There is a darkness at the heart of Still Walking that surprises. Yes, it may be immediately apparent that Kyohei (Yoshio Harada) is a brusque and stubborn old goat, whilst his wife Toshiko (Kirin Kiki) does not know how to hold her tongue at times. As a consequence, some degree of frostiness – even bitchiness – was to be expected when their black sheep of a middle-aged son Ryota (Hiroshi Abe) returned home for a rare visit, with his wife and stepson in tow. However, beyond any such petulant froideur and tactless remarks, there then lies a whole other level to this family drama. Yet, this only reveals itself when one may have already conceded that this film is destined to be little more than a respectable but relatively banal modern-day homage to the work of the great Yasujiro... Faith Healer (The Gate Theatre, Dublin) – A Theatre Review via No Ordinary Fool, Jan 29th, 2010 at 00:00

image Samuel Beckett’s tramps waited interminably by the side of a road for salvation to arrive. Here, though, Brian Friel’s itinerant faith healer roves all over Scotland and Wales in search of answers to his growing sense of spiritual crisis. Their obscure yet lyrical place names even become a form of desperate mantra that he can intone. Perhaps he does so as a form of self-mollification or perhaps it is an incantation to temporarily summon back forgotten wisps of memory. What does become immediately clear, though, in a play rich with imagery and allusion, is that Frank Hardy (Owen Roe) has spent a lifetime trying to come to terms with who he is. His initials are identical to those of his occupation. However, could his life have been predestined in this manner? Sometimes he does heal... Similar posts

COLD SOULS trailer via egoeccentric, Jun 19th, 2009 at 13:45

In response to shiny, bigger, better American consumerism comes Cold Souls, a metaphysical comedy in which souls can be extracted and traded as commodities. Balancing on a tightrope between deadpan humor and pathos, and between reality and fantasy, the film presents Paul Giamatti as himself, agonizing over his interpretation of Uncle Vanya. Paralyzed with anxiety, he stumbles upon a solution via a New Yorker article about a high-tech company promising to alleviate suffering by deep-freezing souls. Giamatti enlists their services, intending to reinstate his soul once he survives the performance. But complications ensue when a mysterious, soul-trafficking mule borrows Giamatti's stored soul for an ambitious, but unfortunately talentless, soap-opera actress. Rendered soulless, he is left...
