Brian Lenihan is Europe’s Worst Finance Minister via Irish Election, Nov 17th, 2009 at 10:57

image On the day it emerges that AIB will merge the position of chief executive and chairman – contravening pretty solid principles of corporate governance – and install Dan O Connor in the position from within the bank, Brian Lenihan’s credibility takes a further dent as he comes bottom of the pile in this year’s ranking of top EU finance ministers by the Financial Times. Christine Lagard of France takes top spot, with Peer Steinbruck behind. The credibility rating for Lenihan will take a further hit as the FT digests the news that the incoming AIB executive chairman and managing director will be paid in excess of the recommended pay caps: Mr Doherty, AIB’s preferred choice as chief executive, is set to be appointed to the new post of managing director in a... Have AIB just pulled a fast one? via Twenty Major - Still smoking in Dublin bars, Nov 18th, 2009 at 12:26

AIB announces new managing director is to be: a) appointed from within despite a search for an outside candidate that apparently found nobody suitable for the job b) to be paid more than the €500,000 per annum cap Minister Lenihan put on bakers salaries. There is uproar on the airwaves and in the Dail. “Bankers are back to being bankers after they get their bail-out”, and so forth. Today, it is announced that Colm Doherty will wear his €500,000 salary cap and assume the role of ‘managing director’ of the bank, taking over from Chief Executive Eugene Sheehy. Crisis averted, pandemonium over. Then there’s this from the Irish Times: The bank plans to appoint current chairman Dan O’Connor as executive chairman encompassing the two roles of chairman and... New Appointments at AIB _ Game, Set & Match to Old Guard via Joan Burton, TD for Dublin West in Dail Eireann, Nov 17th, 2009 at 10:14

If media reports are accurate of new appointments and pay arrangements at the top of Allied Irish Banks, then it represents game, set and match for the old guard in Irish banking and total capitulation on the part of Minister for Finance. The plan by Allied Irish Bank, apparently with the agreement of the government, to appoint Mr. Dan O’Connor as an Executive Chairman on an interim basis, will send out a message of ‘no change’ in the banks and would be contrary to the principles of good corporate governance. “It appears that this is being done to facilitate the later appointment to the position of CEO of the board’s preferred internal candidate, Mr. Colm Doherty, who will meantime become Managing Director. And to add insult to injury it appears that the government is willing... Similar posts

Burton Criticises Plan for Appointment of Executive Chair at AIB via Joan Burton, TD for Dublin West in Dail Eireann, Nov 9th, 2009 at 16:45

The Labour Party Spokesperson on Finance, Deputy Joan Burton, has expressed surprise at media reports of a plan by Allied Irish Bank to appoint an Executive Chairman on an interim basis, saying the move would send out a message of ‘no change’ in the banks and would be contrary to the principles of good corporate governance. “I am also very surprised that the same reports indicate that the government was likely to agree to this move. Having provided more than €3bn of taxpayers’ money to recapitalise AIB, the government should continue to insist on the appointment of an outsider to the position of Chief Executive. “The appointment to the position of Executive Chairman of Mr. O’Connor, who has been a member of the Board of AIB since 2007, would make mockery of all of the...
