I wrote this for today’s Irish Times magazine, with the sea salt and sea salt ice cream recipes:
WHEN IT COMES to summer, at least in memory, the days are sunny, lazy and worry-free. This year, we have already had so many sunny days that it feels like a real summer, and it’s triggering memories that have been dormant these past few years. There’s the smell of pollen, cut grass and barbecue smoke on clothes, the tired buzz of insects overwhelmed by abundance, music outdoors, ripples of contented laughter, the slipperiness of suntan lotion, the heat of the skin after a day at the beach, and the softness of truly ripe fruit. The senses awaken.
Of summer tastes, the first that comes to my mind is salt. It’s the salt of sweat, but even more so the salt of the sea; salt dried on...

Yesterday marked the beginning of my summer holidays and tomorrow marks the beginning of the Galway Powerboat Festival. Last year, Galway hosted the Volvo Ocean Race and it was very successful. They have reopened the Race Village also. Another event happening over here is the Little Havana Festival being held in the Latin Quarter with some familiar faces performing, for example, Crystal Swing.

Excerpts of the journal documenting what I’m hoping is my last day as I attempt to reach the west coast:
Out loud I screamed at myself - “Look ! Look ! Look!”. I was trying to tell myself to look at that blueness cradled between 2 mountains as I was descending from Santa Ysabel. Going 30mph the view only lasted a minute and then no more as I was left to wonder if I’d seen the coast which was 40 miles away.
What would it look like? The image I’d pictured in my mind so often. What shade of blue, of green or of turquoise might it be? Could it be grey or brown (the Liffey influence)? A sandy beach or rocks? Scenic or unremarkable? Residential or...

One of the many freelance hats I wear is as web editor for Afloat Magazine’s online portal, Afloat.ie.
Right now, one of the biggest stories in sailing is the news that Ireland will host the finish of the Volvo Ocean Race.
When Knut Frostad, CEO of the race, came to Ireland to announce that news, I got 20 minutes with him to ask him about his plans. The video is pasted above. What’s interesting today is that Auckland has, overnight, been announced as the final stopover port for the race. If you scroll through the video to around the 2.15 point, Knut talks about the possibility of sending the boats on a lap of Ireland (or possible Britain and Ireland) en route from Lorient to Galway. And he says that he’ll announce details like that once the stopover ports have all been...

Last weekend the annual Irish Blog Awards took place. This year they took place in Galway which made it a little easier and a lot closer to get to. Galway is possibly the best party city in Ireland, so of course…. the night was long… (we made it til 4.30am!)
I headed down with Aoife, (@stranded_aoife) who was at the wheel, and also on the decks… well via her ipod at least. The Model’s blog was nominated on the long-list for Best Arts & Culture blog but unfortunately didn’t make the shortlist. Fingers crossed for next year so.
Following a little costume change at our guesthouse, and a bite to eat in town, we headed for our destination….
We kicked off with the Ladies Tea Party at the very fashionable G Hotel. From the moment we arrived we were...

Four different styles but one thing in common – all great photographers [For readers of the Galway Advertiser, Rónan took all those great pictures of the Volvo Ocean Race last year that appeared as a pictorial in the paper.] There’s a photowalk starting at 11am this morning in Eyre Square by the fountain [and anyone with a camera is welcome]. It looks like there will be quite a few photographers there – it will be interesting to see Galway through their eyes [and their...

Shutter Island, the oft-delayed Martin Scorsese adaptation of the best-selling Denis Lehane book finally hits Irish cinema screens on March 12th. Usually these kind of release date changes result from studio unease at something that took place during production, be it unsatisfactory effects or the commonly cited “creative differences”. In this instance it would appear that these usual reasons were not at fault, for Scorsese brings us a vision that is so close to a Hitchcockian murder-mystery as to make you believe Alfred himself had a hand in its creation.
It’s 1954, the ghosts of World War II still linger and the red scare has people hunting for Communists in every neighbourhood. Teddy Daniels, a former soldier and current US Marshall is called to investigate the...

Yes it says it in the title, the Volvo Ocean Race is returning in 2012 and Galway will be the last stop. The city of Galway alone earned almost €60 million at the last Ocean Race. My experience at the Ocean Race was great and probably for everyone else, also around that time was the first time I saw the Galway Air Show because it was during the Ocean Race. Maybe if this blog gets a few more hits by 2012, I will do special coverage of the Ocean Race for everybody on the planet, Evan’s Planet that is.

 An Ocean Energy buoy
FINE Gael spokesperson on communications, energy and natural resources, Simon Coveney, has welcomed today’s announcement of a major development deal between Ocean Energy and Dresser-Rand as a “major kick-start” for the Irish ocean energy sector.
Deputy Coveney said that this deal can be the essential link between a successful pilot testing phase and the roll out of thousands of commercially viable wave energy generators.
“Today’s announcement will place Irish business at the forefront of ocean energy technology. There were concerns that Ireland was slipping behind other countries in the race to develop commercially viable ocean energy technology but this development deal will be a much welcomed boost for the Irish energy sector.

The Minister of Finance in the Republic of Ireland delivered a tough budget yesterday, which was aimed at better balancing the country’s budget in 2010. Most areas of public expenditure took a cut, with the very notable exception of tourism. Overall, the government actually committed to increasing its spend on tourism support next year by 2% to €155 million. The Minister of Finance described the industry as a “critical, labour intensive indigenous sector” in his speech, in which he also noted Tourism Ireland’s ambition to grow overseas tourism and revenue by 3% next year.
Amongst the key details underpinning the announcement were:
The allocation for capital investment in tourism product development is to be increased threefold next year to €22...

Last Spring, while working at the St. Patrick’s Festival in Dublin, I got to meet some great people by working as the festival’s front of house person. I also had a massive crush on new media, and so expressed an interest in working on the Pix.ie photo-sharing competition, and the festival’s social media accounts.
When I moved back to Sligo in late March, I approached the organiser of the Volvo Ocean Race festival in Galway, the talented Maria Moynihan, about the Pix.ie photo sharing competition idea for their festival later that summer. Roll on 7 months later, the competition broke the Irish record for photo uploads, over 17,000 pics, and then became an exhibition and now it’s on tour to sailing clubs around Ireland. Each day during the festival the top photos...

Of course mention of the media peppered his speech, although he did say of his relations with the fourth estate - 'the best of times, the worst of times'.His barely concealed venom was directed at Eamon Gilmore. The 'unfair procedure' of pre-empting a fair hearing of his defence of his actions. Totally ignoring the fact that Gilmore offered him an alternative, that of a full public disclosure, instead of the 'fair hearing' behind closed doors, as O'Donoghue wanted.Of course he never arranged any accomodation or travel - that was undertaken by civil servants or those who invited him to their country or function. Statement Of John O’ Donoghue T.D.
Ceann Comhairle.
Tuesday, 13 October 2009.
1. It is an accepted convention of our political system that the Ceann Comhairle should remain above political controversy. Implicit in that duty is an overriding obligation of fairness among all members of this House. It was therefore inappropriate for me, as Ceann Comhairle, to publicly respond to various matters concerning costs incurred while I was Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism. For many people my silence probably indicated an absence of justification and a lack of defence.
2. By failing to respond to the various charges and allegations published in the media I surrendered the right to protect myself in the public media. I did so to preserve the integrity and impartiality of the Office of Ceann...
