Biorhythm: Science Gallery via Girl from the Hills Blog, Jul 16th, 2010 at 17:17

image BIORHYTHM: MUSIC AND THE BODY 02:07:10-01:10:10 What makes us dance? Why do we sing the blues? Could there be a formula for the perfect hit? Music is a central part of the human experience, but what is the natural force that drives us to sing, strum, drum and dance? What is the scientific basis of whistling, humming and toe-tapping? Cognitive scientist Steven Pinker recently claimed that music is “auditory cheesecake”, designed to tickle parts of our brain designed for more serious purposes like speech and abstract reasoning. Darwin, on the other hand, preferred to think that music and dance evolved as an integral part of human courtship rituals. ‘Biorhythm: Music and the Body’ now open at Science Gallery via State Magazine, Jul 5th, 2010 at 15:49

image ‘BIORHYTHM: Music and the Body‘ is the latest exhibition at Dublin’s Science Gallery, exploring the science of human reactions to music. The interactive installation opened this weekend and runs until October 1st. Biorhythm looks at what inspires our interactions with, responses to, and creation of music, incorporating ideas of tradition, culture, and genetics. Visitors can partake in experiments to find out how their brain and emotions respond to certain types of music. The installation includes over a dozen different installations, including ‘Emotion in Motion’, which uses heart-rate monitors and skin conductance to read your physical response to music samples, and the ‘Sonic Bed’, a structure that visitors can lay in as... It’s the first time the Science Gallery have ventured into the world of music and it could prove to be very interesting indeed. In the meantime, they have a new exhibition being launched tonight called ‘Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef’. I was at their recent TED X 3.0 talk and was really impressed by one of their speakers, Margaret Wertheim. Margaret has spoken at TED before, as you can see here: Her goal is create... Similar posts
