Fiddler’s Green 2010 via LightingLittleFires, Jul 29th, 2010 at 04:13

Phew! July is speeding to a climactic finish and I am still trying to digest all that has happened since last we spoke. It is always a dangerous thing to take ‘a few days for myself’ away from the blog. I felt I deserved it after the wonderful chaos and community of ‘A Midsummer Day’s Dream’ but a few days became a week and suddenly the Festival was upon me. Chances of blogging during Festival – slim to none. Things to blog about during Festival – incalculable! So let’s get started… Fiddler’s Green Festival takes place every year in my boooootiful home town of Rostrevor. Since the beginning of my memories living here (we moved from Belfast when Lil Sis No.1 was born, so I was 4) the Festival has been the mark of mid-summer... Similar posts

Japanese School! And such. via EIL Intercultural Learning, Jul 27th, 2010 at 15:23

Nah. It can't be. It has NOT been over a week since I last posted! Because if that were true (which would be ABSURD), that'd mean that I'm over halfway through my trip! Which means I'm getting deported in under 3 weeks! :-O Since we all agree that that CANNOT POSSIBLY be the case, let's continue on under the assumption that it is now... Friday! Friday the 23rd of July! So what has happened in the FIVE DAYS since I've last posted? Well, I've turned 18 (still a minor in Japan, which means that I have ABSOLUTELY NOT BEEN DRINKING. Nope. Nuh-uh. Any photos I upload of the birthday itself will totally NOT have been Photoshopped, as a result), finished high school (again!), and eaten natto! If you don't get the reference, Google it and you'll see why I mention it! Westerners are supposed to... Similar posts

Perusing the papers via poetbloggs.net, Jul 27th, 2010 at 08:21

Eoin Colfer features in the Irish Times – live from Paris (and the Guardian have a chat with him too) R.J. Anderson and Saundra Mitchell talk faith and fantasy and Meg Rosoff looks at biography and writing real life characters into fiction. Frank Cottrell Boyce reviews Louis Sachar’s excellent The Cardturner: Reading his books is like being hustled in a card game by someone who seems straight-talking and modest but who turns out to be a virtuoso card sharp. So is The Cardturner one big bluff or is he really holding all the trumps? I don’t want to spoil it for you but he does something towards the end of this book that I can’t imagine anyone else even trying to get away with. As Uncle Lester might say, nicely played, Louis. Cork’s Pink Auction in support of Action Breast Cancer - Donation of prizes wanted! via Irish Craft Update, Jul 26th, 2010 at 23:50

This coming October, we are holding the first ever Pink Auction in Cork City. The auction will bring together many people with two goals —- to promote creative textiles in Ireland and to raise money for Action Breast Cancer, a programme of the Irish Cancer Society. People within the community as well as around the country are participating by making and donating handcrafted creative textile items to be auctioned off. The event will take place at The Imperial Hotel on Sunday, 10th October 2010.  We are on Ravelry, Facebook, Twitter, and have our own blog. The more support we can get the more we can do and the better it is for breast cancer awareness. Our flyer is at the top of this page of our blog: http://pinkcork.blogspot.com/p/media.html   The Pink Auction... Similar posts

Experimental film. via kevindowling.ie, Jul 26th, 2010 at 21:18

I’m no film buff by any standard. I hold close company with quite a few good friends who are either in love with, or involved with the film industry in Ireland. Friends range from passing interest to full blown career. So much so that I was dragged to went willingly to the Galway Film Fleadh. On first account, this seems a preposterous notion. I’ve seen about 3 films in the last 12 months in the cinema. Anything else I probably saw via illegal manner, and fell asleep before anything finished. I’m a music fan, and unashamedly so, so while I do enjoy a good film, I prefer to see what I want to see, rather then what’s been recommended to me (though often that involves quite a bit of crossover). Galway was amazing. As my first fleadh, or film festival in general, I was... Similar posts

Dublin’s newest Gastro Pub L Mulligan Grocer via The Tale of the Ale, Jul 26th, 2010 at 17:24

image To take the plunge and actually open a pub in Ireland at the moment takes some serious bravery. Pubs are struggling in Ireland because more and more people drink at home. The reason? Prices are probably the biggest reason. When you can get a can of fizzy yellow stuff for less than a Euro and then go to the pub and get the same beer for €5 or more, there is just no value to be had. Publicans blame the smoking ban but I think that is rubbish as I know of plenty of people who never went to pubs because of the smoking and only since the ban do we venture in to pubs. I am one of those people. So who set up the pub? Well it is the joint venture of two Irish Craft Brewer members. Colin (session) and Séaneen (9beanrow). Neen actually is the author of popular (mouthwatering) beer and food blog... Similar posts

Irish Hotels? Struggling to survive? How about meeting customers needs? via ValueIreland.com, Jul 26th, 2010 at 10:56

image Instead of doing the same thing that you’ve always done, hoping that eventually things will magically get better again. There were two articles within 24 hours of each other recently that inspired this particular rant. The first was from Twenty Major in his “Tourism Suggestions” blog post. Straight out, he touches on a subject I wrote about here some time ago – the misguided focusing of tourism people on the so called “tourism tax” as the reason why people aren’t coming to Ireland: So fewer people are coming to Ireland. Numbers are 25% down apparently and tourism bosses want the €10 tourist tax scrapped. Which kind of misses the point. That tax is no expensive, it’s everything else. He goes on to point out how detached from... Similar posts

Failed experiments in reports digestion, annotation and Entity extraction on the cheap via dublinstreams, Jul 26th, 2010 at 04:36

I've been looking around for ways to digest and annotate and make lengthy reports more usable for years. One of the main ways to do with would be through named entity extraction running the report through a program and extracting all key words, and sorting them into proper names, places, organisations, companies etc. I have looked around and there are lots of university thesis papers on how to do it but it seems nobodies cracked it, unless mega corporations maybe able to do it on a industrial level. You could also paste it all the report into a wiki and hope people will annotate and link sections of the report, but wiki's aren't easy to use and there no way to automate it even a little that I know of. Entity extraction has come back in vogue at the moment particularly in conjunction... Similar posts

Snow in July (!!), Dia del Amigo, Bouncy Castles and a little bit of DIY! via EIL Intercultural Learning, Jul 26th, 2010 at 03:48

The largest free festival in Belfast … via Alan in Belfast, Jul 26th, 2010 at 01:57

image This blog mentions a good number of festivals each year.Last night saw the launch of this year's "largest free festival in Belfast" ... Belfast Pride. It's twenty years since the first pride parade through Belfast. To mark the milestone, the organisers produced a half hour documentary Pride, Sweat and Tears looking back at the parades and the festival that grew out of it.Pride marches around the world are very much small 'p' political events, asserting people's rights and making a collective and proud stand against prejudice that remains in most societies. Last night's launch was an opportunity for Belfast's current Lord Mayor, Councillor Pay Convery, to turn up and support the local LGBT community. Speaking before the screening, he commented on Belfast City Council's support for the... Similar posts
