How monolithic is Irish politics really? via SINN FÉIN - KEEP LEFT, today at 18:45

image Election result after election result says very but referendum results hint at a large undercurrent of dissent, favourable to progressive parties but which somehow has not been fully exploited by progressive parties.   Despite an overwhelming campaign by the Yes side in Lisbon 2 with every type of trick, lie and inducement played by the Yes side 32.9 % of voter choose not to listen to their betters and still voted no.     Referendums have often hinted at a strange dislocation or dissatisfaction amongst the Irish electorate. Frequently despite a unified establishment call for one result a large cohort, often 30-35% would not bend the knee and do as it was told. Effectively saying to establishment parties that we do not trust you on matters of social policy, we do not trust... Similar posts

Brian Lenihan’s illness, John Crown and TV3 via The Crimson Observer, Jul 28th, 2010 at 18:45

It was on the News @ 5.30 on St Stephen’s Day 2009 that TV3 broadcast that Brian Lenihan was seriously ill.   This report, included a contribution by the distinguished cancer specialist, John Crown, in which he described his expert knowledge of pancreatic cancer, including the implications of both timely and untimely diagnosis. The report prompted a considerable number of complaints to the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, including one from me.  The Authority issued a finding on 9 March 2010 that this broadcast was within the requirements of the fairness, objectivity and impartiality rule, as defined by the Broadcasting Act 2009.    The Authority found on viewing the report that the reference to the type of cancer was editorially justified and in the... Ryanair PR moves to Edelman via Blog, Jul 28th, 2010 at 12:39

image Ryanair has appointed Edelman to handle its PR in Ireland and the UK after a competitive pitch. In a joint statement issued by Stephen McNamara of Ryanair and Edelman’s corporate affairs director, Joe Carmody, it was said that over 30 agencies presented for the business. The contract starts from August 1st 2010. The review was prompted following a decision by the low fares airline and Murray Consultants to go their separate ways. It was understood that Murrays, which had handled the account for 15 years, were unhappy with the terms of their agreement. Ryanair offered agencies pitching €7,500 a month to handle its account. Apart from Edelman, other Dublin agencies which tendered were Drury and O’Herlihy Communications. Drury handled Aer Lingus for many years before it moved... Similar posts

Smooth & Juicy via Yarn Classes, Jul 27th, 2010 at 21:36

image I finally got around to actually making some wee hats for the Innocence Smoothie campaign in aid of Age Action Ireland. The campaign is called The Big Knit, however, in usual rouge style, I went ahead and made some juicy fruits with my hook. I even included a couple of strawberries with yoghurt in true smoothie style. Innoncent Smoothie Big Knit © Irene Lundgaard 2010 I’m thinking I perhaps should add a bit of yoghurt to all of the fruits. Come to think of it, perhaps I should take the yoghurt off the strawberries… What do you think? Obituary: Harry Beckett; a doyen of Jazz trumpet and flugelhorn. via ORGANIZED RAGE, Jul 27th, 2010 at 13:46

image It was with great sadness I read this morning that Harry Beckett, the great jazz trumpeter, flugelhorn player and composer had died. Between 1963 and 75, where ever my musical tastes took me, Harry Beckett always seemed to be there. I first came across him at Soho's Flamingo Jazz club in the early 1960s, I as a callow, pill popping mod and Harry as a sideman in one of the best UK 1960’s R@B bands, Herbie Goins and the Nightimers, the jazz guitarist, John McLaughlin who went on to play with Miles was also part of this outfit.By the early 70’s I was into free jazz, Harry was amongst a group of fine London based musicians who congregated and let their hair down most Friday night at Peanuts, a small club I frequented above a pub at the back of Liverpool Street station. Amongst them were... Similar posts

Go see The Colleen Bawn at the @ProjectArts Centre via Culch.ie, Jul 27th, 2010 at 11:24

image When the interval arrived, I was eager to find out more about the play’s history, so I leapt on to Wikipedia and I was surprised to discover it was written 150 years ago. The ‘Quiet Man’ style Oirish brogue seemed so over the top, that I thought it a brilliant modern parody of the era. Instead, I discover that this exciting, fast paced and very funny melodrama was written by Irish playwright Dion Boucicault in 1860. The Colleen Bawn, directed by Jimmy Fay, centres on Hardress Cregan’s (played by Ian Lloyd Anderson) secret marriage to Eily ‘The Colleen Bawn’ O’Connor (Liz Fitzgibbon), a woman considered to be below his station, and the fact that he is due to wed the wealthy Anne Chute (Charlie Murphy), which would solve his family’s... Active Stock Screener: Dividend and Earnings via Zignals blog, Jul 27th, 2010 at 05:21

image As the market works a tradable bottom I took a look back over the past couple of weeks to see what stocks have emerged in our active stock screen. The scan looks for US stocks with an annual change in revenue of 25% or more and a dividend yield of at least 5%.A few stocks fell out of the loop, but not all because of loss of merit: Ine of the stocks to go was Blackstone Group (BX). The last dividend payment was cut from $0.30 to $0.10. It wasn't long before the stock soon lost $12 support, but the drop in price wasn't enough to recover its dividend yield. Could be a while before this regains its status. Baytex Energy (BTE.UN) made its appearance in the June feature. Over the past month the stock has evolved from a trading range to bullish ascending triangle. With the rise in price the... Similar posts

Revisiting the NDP via The Irish Economy, Jul 26th, 2010 at 18:56

The government has released its revised National Development Plan for the period to 2016.   The documentation includes a short leaflet, Investing for Growth and Jobs: Infrastructure Investment Priorities 2010 – 2016.   With a bit of chutzpah, the document claims the 40 percent cut in capital spending as “stimulus” for the economy.   The emphasis is on new priorities and not on the overall cuts.   Fortunately, the Department of Finance has also released Infrastructure Investment Priorities 2010 – 2016: A Financial Framework, which makes a more sober case for the shift in strategy (see, in particular, Chapters 2 & 3).   The arguments of Colm McCarthy for just-in-time infrastructure provision (based on the time value of money) and more broadly for cost-benefit analysis... NPD Group: PC Game Digital Downloads Reaching Parity With In-Store Purchases via POD, Self Publishing and Independent Publishing, Jul 26th, 2010 at 00:21

image I don't normally cover the software games market here, but I thought this piece over on Joystiq.com quoting a press release from market research company , The NPD Group, was interesting. While US based, it does give us an insight on the PC gaming market, and that sales parity between physical and digital distribution channels has almost been reached. No, at the moment, we are not looking at the Sony Playstation or Microsoft's XB consoles, but with online networking well established in these formats on both sides of the Atlantic, it cannot be long before we see retailers like GameStop under serious threat and maybe even the gaming manufacturing giants move to mainly digital distribution channels. Strangely, I have always felt the games market was a far more progressive platform, and yet,... Similar posts
