Anglo Grinder via The Punishment of Sloth (12:15, Sep 1) Still plenty of ifs and buts in determining final cost to taxpayer – The Irish Times – Wed, Sep 01, 2010 The meter on the bailout has reached €22.88 billion. Some €18.88 billion has come through promissory notes, or State IOUs, which, the Government says, allows it to spread the cost over a “manageable” 10 to 15 years. I’ve been sticking my head in the sand over this. I find it hard to hold in my head the idea of what a billion is, let alone €20bn. It takes necessary thinking labour time, of which I don’t have a great...
Anglo should publish analysis says TD via corkpolitics.ie (14:35, Sep 1) Michael McGrath MICHAEL McGrath, Fianna Fáil T.D. for Cork South Central and Vice Chairperson of the Oireachtas Finance Committee, has today repeated a call he made last April for the analysis of the different options for the future of Anglo Irish Bank to be published. According to Deputy McGrath, “In the interests of public accountability, the analysis of the different options considered for the future of Anglo Irish Bank should be now made available by the bank for public and expert scrutiny. In recent days, the Bank’s Chairperson, Mr. Alan Dukes, has said that a detailed analysis of the different... A Fianna Fail Senator on Anglo and Emigration. via John McGuirk (14:23, Sep 1) I would generally find it a little crass to write a blogpost which basically consists of “I was on the radio last night and it was very interesting….”, but in this particular case I’m going to make an exception. I was joined on the panel of the Marc Coleman show last night by Carol Hunt from the Sunday Independent, Seamus Dooley from the NUJ, and Senator Mary White from Fianna Fáil, with Anglo Irish Bank the subject du jour. In a 20 minute segment starting at about 37 minutes in (below) Senator White delivered one of the more extraordinary performances... See 6 more posts on this topic
Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission via THE IRISH OBSERVER (17:53, Aug 27) The resignation of Monica Mc Williams as Chief Human Rights Commissioner in Northern Ireland, is no loss to those of us who value the rights of all people. The Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission is funded and directed by the British State, it has no value in the real fight for Human Rights in Northern Ireland. The majority of the Human Rights industry in the north has become the anti-thesis of the Human Rights genre. People in the pay of the British State can never represent the demand for Human Rights by those who are marginalised in society. Those on inflated...
Voices on Unity - Ian Stevenson via Ógra Shinn Féin (13:43, Sep 2) Cllr Ian StevensonBallymoney District CouncilDUPI believe and feel that I am intrinically British and politically this is verified as I live in part of the United Kingdom. I believe I have a stronger affinity with Scotland, a link which has diminished over the centuries. As a Northern Ireland Unionist I have seen so many concessions to the nationalist population within Northern Ireland that are contrary to my wishes that a United Ireland I perceive would only further accentuate the erosion of the culture of a people who wish to remain British. One should also note the decline of Protestant population... What happens when social media really takes off. via Thoughts on Communications in Ireland (16:46, Aug 30) I am surprised that the launch of Microsofts Kinect, the long expected arrival of internet TVs by year end and the never ending expansion of cloud based services has not generated more debate about the potential impact on PR and social media. In the not too distant future instead of the collection of different remote controls, DVD/VHS players, games consoles and related bits you will eventually have a very large screen with a built in sensor that can pick up and interpret your movements. This will all be connect to a ultra fast broadband connection which pulls down the different services you are...

Mezze recipes, part one via CheapEats.ie (11:30, Aug 27) I’ve been watching Jamie Oliver’s New European Series - so far I’ve seen him in Morocco, Spain and, most recently, Greece. This episode was all about simple ingredients simply put together. He went spear fishing, met up with some bee keepers and nibbled on some goats cheese with a Greek Orthodox monk. Some of the dishes he covered were a classic Greek salad, Honey and Pistachio Cake, tasty looking kebabs, fisherman’s stew made from sea water and fresh Tuna with Lemon Sauce. All very inspiring stuff. He also did a segment on Mezze which is a selection of small dishes...

"The demand for Repeat Leaving Certificates has increased in recent years as our students chase the points system for their chosen profession. New Class Size Figures Show Damage Done to Education System via Ruairi Quinn TD (15:11, Sep 1) The revelation by the Department of Education and Skills that 107,000 primary school children are in classes with over 30 pupils highlights the damaging impacts cutbacks are having in our primary schools. 15,000 additional students are attending primary school in our overcrowded and under-funded education system since last year’s survey was published. This is the real evidence of the government’s strategy to repeatedly cut public spending. Fianna Fáil have not only wrecked the economy, they are seriously damaging our education system too. Feis Teamhra: A Turn at Tara. via The Tara Poetry Blog (18:50, Aug 29) A Turn at Tara.On a windswept but sunny day a large crowd turned out for a celebration of poetry and song at Tara today, though given that some of Ireland's best known poets were in attendance it was only to be expected. Or if you're coming next year, come early if you want to get parking! I think the event was sponsored by "Poetry Ireland" and organised by the singer songwriter Susan McKeown, who was able to hold the crowd without the aid of a microphone or sound system but then she has a great voice! Lally's Voice via Montana Gael (07:28, Sep 2) They're burying Mick Lally in Dublin today, and the world's the poorer for it. At age 64, Lally rolled and rumbled when he spoke, his timbre recalling a rough plane of soft pine. He showed a kind character to match the grain. He was an actor's actor of stage and screen, a man of the West with a face turned to the world.Born in the Mayo Gaeltacht, Lally was a native Irish speaker who moved between worlds. As a young man on the boards, he spread his home country's influence by revitalizing Irish culture. He filled the stage. In 1975,...

Mick Lally meant Glenroe and Glenroe meant Sunday nights and Sunday nights meant I had to be back at school the next day. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World via The Jackanory (16:16, Sep 2) Director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuss) sets himself a difficult task with his latest project. In an age where comic book adaptations adorn our screens at every turn, the honeymoon period is quickly coming to an end. Kick-Ass tried to do the very same, injecting hipster sensibilities into the preexisting formula, failing early on to carve a substantial niche for itself. But in the mysterious wilds of Toronto, practically anything is possible. Drawing from the pulsating series by Bryan Lee O’Malley, Pilgrim (Michael Cera) is the jilted bass guitarist of Sex Bob-omb, a group in need...

… and your video kicks for free via Pursued by a Bear (12:51, Sep 1) Arcade Fire – the mere mention of these words lately seems to bring out bloggers and commentators in a rash of hastily-slung insults and rabidly constructed defences. First, there was their by-all-accounts limp Oxegen performance; then they had the temerity to announce a date in the O2, follow it up with a second (after the first sold out in nanoseconds), and they had the cheek to charge €75 for the privilege (Jim Carroll and On the Record have been doing a grand job of stoking that particular Arcade Fire here). Did Glenn Beck strangle a male prostitute to death? No he didn’t. But let’s talk about it anyway. via Jason O Mahony (05:55, Sep 2) One of the more disturbing things I’ve come across recently is this poll figure from the US saying that 18% of people polled believe that President Obama is a Muslim. What’s particularly worrying, indeed surreal, is that the number of people who believe that he is a Christian (which he is, although I can’t believe we actually have to discuss this stuff) has dropped from 48% to 34%. In other words, people who actually were aware of the truth have now swung over to believing the lie. What is truly scary about this is the Goebbels-size lie that it is,...

Emmy Night via gaelick (11:05, Aug 29) Tonight is the big night for American telly. The Emmys, those Oscars of the small screen are on tonight. Actually, I should specify, The Emmys are so big now that they are split into two groups: The Daytime Emmy Awards that Ellen owns and the The Primetime Emmy Awards, which are on tonight. This year, Glee has been nominated in most categories, but insiders agree that they probably won’t win any of the big ones. Glee is an Emmy anomaly in that it’s youth-led; based in high-school with unknown actors. Most of the acting nominees have been around for years....

You need a gravatar! via students.theleavingcert.com (20:32, Sep 2) When you leave a comment on a blog (any blog, not just ours), you may have noticed some comments have images beside them and others don’t. Why is that? Well, most blogs use a site called gravatar.com to get those images. Gravatar.com is a place where you associate your email address with an image. So let’s say my email address is hello@hello.com. If i comment on this blog right now using that email address, i’ll look like this; However if i sign up to gravatar and associate my hello@hello.com email address with an image and then leave a comment, i’ll now... Website recommendations via Moany Moanerson (15:38, Aug 30) There is nothing worse than going to a website to buy a book and then it recommends 3 more. Then you click those, then they recommend more, then you're back to the start and now you're choosing between 9 books. They want you to buy more than you came on for of course. But it drives me insane the way I can't help myself from clicking on the shagging links! I end up reading reviews, going to forums and discussion groups on said topic, and getting nothing done with my... See all 3 posts
Babydoll and the Playsuits via blaubushka (09:21, Sep 1) I've been a big fan of Dahlia's for a long time now and I'm very excited about the newest collection; tapping into all things fiercely floral and sweetly sixties mixed up with a vintage hunter feel and quirky wild child attitude. Man Monday: Cotton Love on eBay via Prudence (10:04, Aug 30) Last week I was feeling the nautical summer trend that is boat shoes – but now I’m prepping for the winter with thrifty eBay menswear. Vintage clothes aren’t an exclusively female trend and with shops like Wild Child, guys are spoilt for choice when it comes to cheap and unique vintage pieces. One of my favourite online... Wild Child Originals, Dublin via Whisty Blogs Dublin Fashion (08:42, Aug 30) Hey All, This week I’m mostly craving printed maxi skirts and dresses. 60′s / 70′s vintage printed, maxi skirts and dresses to be more precise. Since I’d noticed Wild Child vintage clothing had moved from Georges St. Arcade to Drury Street., I thought a bit of window shopping / dressing-up was in order. The new... See all 3 posts
New children's hospital on fast track through the planning procedures via An Irish Town Planner's Blog (07:03, Sep 1) THE CONSTRUCTION of the controversial new national children’s hospital on the Mater site in central Dublin is to be fast-tracked through the planning process, it has emerged. The change in approach means the project will not be scrutinised by Dublin city council planners and a planning application will go directly to Bord Pleanála instead.Minister for Health Mary Harney told the Dáil last April that the development board for the project, formally known as the National Paediatric Hospital, would submit a design application to the council in June 2010. This was later pushed back to August, when a media briefing for the...

Tony Blair Book via Shopping in Meath (13:46, Sep 1) Mr Blair's book, A Journey, reveals the extent of the rift between two men who dominated British politics from the moment New Labour stormed to power in 1997 to its capitulation at the polls in May.The former PM says he was put under "relentless personal pressure" by Mr Brown but could not sack his Chancellor because he feared it would lead to him being ousted from No. 10.He writes: "It is easy to say now, in the light of his tenure as Prime Minister, that I should have stopped it; at the time that would have been well-nigh impossible."The words...
Thanks Tony! via Hunting Monsters (23:17, Sep 2) Tony Blair is coming to Dublin! The former British Prime Minister has taken a well-deserved break from his bringing of peace to the Middle East in order to promote a book he has written about himself. He is going to be appearing on the Late Late Show tomorrow and in Eason's on Saturday morning at 11.00 am to promote his memoir. Many people will be along on both occasions to show their gratitude for everything he has done for Iraq and the Middle East generally. I understand that on Saturday people will be assembling at the Spire in advance of... Primary School Love Affairs via belfaststories (07:36, Aug 31) 1969 - I was five years old when I first fell in love. Her name was Diane and I used to walk home from Nettlefield Primary School with her. When we would get to her house I would give her a puckered-lip kiss and say goodbye. Diane lived at number 32 and so did I - it could be nothing else but love. That was until I met Julie the following year. Julie was a real woman - six years old with the body of a woman of seven. The relationship with Julie was much more intense than with Diane. One...

Fight Like Apes bring Midnight Mass to Tower Records via State Magazine (15:17, Aug 27) With their second album The Body of Christ and the Legs of Tina Turner garnering widespread critical acclaim in advance of its nationwide release, it is safe to say that there was a strong air of anticipation surrounding this special album launch. A limited number of wristbands were available in Tower Records from 9am on Thursday morning and were snapped up within the hour, leaving many fans disappointed – but certainly not the FLApes faithful who queued outside the store from as early as 3am. If you only do one thing this weekend … via Pursued by a Bear (10:49, Aug 27) See: It’s all very well being cutting edge and part of the hip new thing, but sometimes you need to get a bit of tradition and grandmastery into your bones, just so you know you were born. The French Connection and the Rediscovery of Thomas Hovenden, now showing at the Ava Gallery in Bangor, Co Down, should do the trick. Obviously it features the work of Hovenden, as well as some of his more illustrious colleagues who were loosely known as the Irish Impressionists – and it’s fair to say some of the work on show here gives that lot...
