A collection of researchers at the National Institute of Regional and Spatial Analysis (NIRSA), R. Kitchen, J. Gleeson, K. Keaveney, and C. O’ Callaghan, have written a powerful new report on Irish property market policy and land development planning policy, critically examining both policy errors during the 1993-2007 period, during the post-crash period post 2007 (including a critique of NAMA) and making suggestions for the future. The link is below:

The report has a modern geographers’ perspective and is strongest when discussing zoning policy, development policy, and property-related tax policies, but there is still plenty of things for mainstream economics comments/discussion in the report.

This week we have chosen four sites that are all sort of loosely related to photography…
Could The iOScars be the future of The Oscars? The capabilities of the 4th generation iPhone are incredible so if the best camera is the one you have with you all the time maybe you could be collecting a golden statue soon.
If you want a great laugh check out Photoshop Disasters. How some of these fatal errors were not picked up is a mystery. The site if full of examples of brutal displays of negligence by designers from all over the world and it a definite guide of what not to do!
The Guinness Storehouse Photo Competition is continuing with great prizes up for grabs every month. If you have visited the Home of Guinness upload your photo to be in with a chance of winning a digital photo frame (and...

Afghanistan leak exposes NATO's incoherent civilian casualty policy26 July 2010Amnesty International has called on NATO to provide a clear, unified system of accounting for civilian casualties in Afghanistan, as leaked war logs paint a picture of an incoherent process of dealing with civilian casualties. Around 92,000 leaked US military files on the war in Afghanistan covering the period 2004-2009 were released Sunday by the website Wikileaks. "The picture that emerges from the leaked data on civilian casualties is that NATO's leadership did not know exactly what was happening on the ground," said Sam Zarifi, Amnesty International's Asia-Pacific Director."The military logs bear out Amnesty International's longstanding concerns that there is no coherent or consistent system for accounting...

Well It's a bit later than promised but I think you'll agree, well worth the wait! Thanks to almost epic levels of incompetence on behalf of Ireland's leading phone and internet provider, I've been without proper BB access for weeks now, and it's been a struggle to get even the basics done. However the power of poetry and creativity triumphed in the end aided by a very high level of...

Ireland is a country which professes to respect citizens of all religions, and those of no religion, and conversely insists that such citizens are fully loyal to the State. It is therefore surely time we took a hard look at the wording of the preamble to our Constitution. In the Name of the Most Holy...

Oh dear, the silly season has arrived once more. I’m certain it’s here as the latest word is that Brian Cowen is to be challenged in the autumn by Brian Lenihan who when he wins is going to call a general election. And if Brian isn’t well enough he’s going to support Mary Hanafin who’ll win and call a general election too. Its not for me to prejudge the Irish electorate but on present form, I’d suggest for any FF leader who’s going to take over and then take us into an election not to go to bed as they’ll likely miss their short time in office. Its not too long ago that Brian Cowen was winning the accolades that Brian Lenihan now accepts. In the last few days of the Ahern era Cowen’s ratings in the opinion polls were similar to the regard that Lenihan now is now held....

Make that 251! Arthur’s Day is back this year with events taking place in Dublin, Cork and Galway and other festivities happening throughout the country on Thursday, 23rd September. Arthur’s Day honours the remarkable legacy of Arthur Guinness, the pioneering brewer and philanthropist who signed the 9,000 year lease on the St. James’s Gate Brewery in 1759 and introduced GUINNESS to the world.
Last year’s Arthur’s Day celebrations captured the imagination of the entire nation with thousands of people joining artists and celebrities to celebrate the peak of the Guinness 250th Celebrations at St James’s Gate Brewery and in pubs and music venues in Dublin and around the world.
This September 23rd, the worldwide celebration will begin at 17:59 (GMT) in...

Skilled? Yes. Clever? No. This hungry little mouse paid the price for over indulgence.
The sneaky three-inch-long field mouse managed to break into what was thought to be an impenetrable bird feeder only to find itself stuck inside.
The owner of the bird feeder has had to free the mouse on more then one occasion. It is believed the mouse burrows its way in through the tiny feeder hole which was thought to be too small for animals to get through.
The fruits of this mouse’s efforts proved to be its downfall as once the mouse had eaten its fill it was too fat to get back out.
Luckily for this rodent the owner of the bird feeder was kind enough to set it...
