GIGS
Keane’s Tim Rice Oxley and Jesse Quin are putting on a show as MT Desolation in Belfast’s Spring & Airbrake on Thursday 9 September and Whelan’s, Dublin on Friday 10 September. The location means something to the pair, for the legend of the PR flack says hat the pair did come upon the idea in Whelan’s while well on the way for needing a taxi home, but apparently not oiled enough to be refused. The plan being two English men trying to sing like Hank Williams. They sobered up, but the germ of the idea spread and they did something about it. The album is out in October. Let me know if its a disaster.

The Cast of Cheers, who rose to prominence having made their wonderful debut album Chariots available as a free download, have announced a nationwide tour.
The terms ‘free’ and ‘quality’ are usually terms which are mutually exclusive but not so here. Chariots is a cracking debut full of taut riffs and vocals which find that perfect balance between edgy and catchy. The album is available for free download orstream HERE and is one of the best Irish albums of the year, thus far . The Cast of Cheers are also a sight to behold live as their recent, most-pit infused, show at Whelan’s documented.
The tour will include a stop at Dublin’s Academy 2 with tickets for that one priced €13.50 and tickets for all venues are on sale now.

Tonight saw the launch of Grand Pocket Orchestra’s album in Whelan’s. Best not asking me my opinion of the gig, I’m in such a foul humour that even Michael Jackson rising from the dead and literally moon walking (on the actual freakin’ moon) wouldn’t impress me much. The Hot Pressers liked it, so i’ll probably...

Friday night, heading to Whelan’s, that’s not really a new thing for The Clink Collective. But on Friday past it wasn’t all jagerbombs and deciding if the DJ was playing ‘good stuff’. We went along to see the much praised and seemingly ubiquitous Cast of Cheers. You can’t read an article on Irish music without seeing their clever moniker appear.
So the gig started as it normally does, with the support, Enemies. We must confess we hadn’t heard of these kids before the evening. We were impressed by their first number, a raucous rocky instrumental that involved two drums for the intro. Pretty good. Then another instrumental and then another – turns out they don’t sing. Not uncommon, but a new experience for us. We can’t say we were made into fans – we...

Black cats and rabbits’ feet may be de rigueur elsewhere on this Friday the 13th, but everyone in Whelan’s on Wexford Street is feeling particularly lucky tonight. Arriving a tad late, State has just watched the last few numbers by Enemies, darlings of the Richter Collective cult, who intersperse their careful thrashing and bashing with those customary noodly bits everyone likes at the moment. We didn’t see the whole set, so we’re just going to say that it was up-beat, loud and all very ‘post-rock’.
Enemies had a fair old crowd before them (State even got dirty looks while squeezing in to join a friend up front) but by the time our headliners have stalked forward on to the stage, it’s more or less full.
The band they’re here to see, The Cast of Cheers, arrived...

Review by Tadgh O’Connor

The Cast of Cheers have slowly risen into our sights over the past year in a whirlwind of buzz since releasing their first album, “Chariot”, for free last February. Boasting a powerful sound combining the strained vocals and powerful bass with the guitar dexterity of math rock, The Cast of Cheers have become a favorite in many circles. Enemies are continuing, what is becoming a tradition of, Irish instrumental rock. Their debut album “We’ve Been Talking” is full technical guitar and snappy drums, and they’re slowly paving themselves a future in the same light as bands like Redneck Manifesto. Full of critical acclaim and a grassroots following.
Enemies started off on a strong foot, moving the crowd...

This week we are dishing up a double helping of quality tunage to set you on your way through days 5-7 of this week; one from a new kid on the block, and one from a legend who’s been around long enough to remember when the block was just fields!
The reason we’re doubling up is that some of us lucky clinkers are off to see both these bands over the weekend and we’ll follow up early next week with reviews for both shows, can’t say fairer than that?
The first track is ‘I Am Lion’ a bass heavy monster from Cast of Cheers, the Dublin quartet currently noising up venues and making a bit of a name for themselves. They play Whelans tonight, and I for one can’t wait for that. Like Woody from the original cast of Cheers these guys aren’t going to be content with...

The Global star who was in films like Shawshank Redemption and Mystic river has been working on this for years, he had opportunities to write soundtracks to certain movies but has kept his creativity for his debut work.Though he’s no plans to end his movie career, Robbins admits there’s something about performing live music that makes it that much more thrilling than the silver screen.
The gig is in Whelans on Sunday September 26th and tickets cost €25 and are on sale now. They will also play at The Limelight in Belfast on Monday 27th September....

With the sound of their wonderfully crafted melodies still ringing in the ears of those who caught them at this years Oxegen festival, Local Natives return with a date at Whelan’s in Dublin on Monday 15th November.
Having arrived on the scene this year with their charming debut album Gorilla Manor, this is another perfect opportunity to catch Local Natives in all their harmonious glory. Brimming with stirring exuberance and serene hush, Gorilla Manor was an arresting album from a band with an intricate dedication to crafting beautiful tracks.
Such tracks will suit the intimate confines of Whelan’s perfectly and tickets priced €16.50 inclusive of booking fee are on sale now.

This bit of news will have me smiling all day - Local Natives are scheduled to play in Whelan’s, on 15th November. Their debut album Gorilla Manor is absolutely brilliant and I thoroughly enjoyed the handful of songs I caught from the LA band at the Red Bull Music Academy in Oxegen 2010. It’s a bit surprising to see them playing in Whelan’s; I would have expected a bigger venue like The Academy or Vicar St, but I dont think its a bad thing either. Tickets are on sale now for only €16.50, and I’ve already got mine –...

With a three for one deal, Clockwork Apple Presents: Sweet Jane, Kowalski & Clockwork Noise on Wednesday August 6th Upstairs Whelans, Dublin.
Clockwork Noise start things off fresh from the Knockanstocken Festival (love the name).
Kowalski make their way from a legion of… fans I think, but it might actually be a legion, in Belfast to play their style of layered harmonies, synth-pop with a little glitch-pop thrown in.
Sweet Jane’s origins lie in 2008, what started as a recording project between Danda & Lydia Des Dolles, quickly evolved in to the current line-up. They weave male and female vocals to create darkly pop-tinged rock. They have been playing support at a lot of gigs throughout the UK and Ireland to promote their début album “Sugar for My Soul”....

One of our favourite things to promote here is Charity gigs, we think its one of those things that everyone benefits from. The Charity get money, The Bands get to play and potentially garner new fans. The venue gets some booze money, It’s all good for everyone involved.
So it’s worth noting that Thursday 12th of August will see Dirty 9′s, Killer Chloe and StayOkay will be playing Whelans in a fund raiser gig for the 2Wheels Tour de Picnic.
They need to raised €1,500 to take part in the event, €500 a head for Kieron Sexton, David Stanley and Ciarán O’Shea Brady to do the Cycle to Electric Picnic, a unique way of getting to a festival i’m sure you’ll agree.
Entry on the night is €6, It’s over 18′s but remember that your...
