Ok so you may have noticed the change from “Networking” to “Networking and News”. The reason for the change was because I want to be able to gather more useful resources for startups beyond binging them together. To help out for the intervening time between events. The aim of TechLudd going forward will be to not only run great free events but also to make people aware of what else is going on that affects startups here.
So please send us your Startup news. Have you hired? Ar you hiring? Have you just raised a round? Are you doing a Demo? Do you have an event that might be of benefit to Startups? Are you closing down? Has the law changed? Has tax changed? What’s your opinion? (We have an opinion section) Did you get a large contract? Did you exit? Just...

DUBLIN, IRELAND - I’m a firm believer of talking about your product as much as possible. The more people you explain it to, the more you tweak your message to improve it. Last night was the first in-person demo of our incident tracking for rescue teams app (the rest have been remote due to my travelling).
My first first-life meetings of Walter, Walter, James, Gavin, Ciara, Ashley, Donncha, Aileen, John, Pat, John & Gordon. Well worth the trip down.
Thanks to everyone for the grilling and the promised introductions!
I had a great meeting today in the hotel with some local rescue workers here in Cork, and am now in another hotel awaiting to meet some Coast Guard guys before my Sea Survival Course in the morning. The pool it’s in can simulate the following environmental...

THE BATMOBILE ENJOYED A breathy run down newly-completed Irish motorway segments between Cashel and Cork tonight, landing next to the Schweizer glider at the Cork Airport Hotel for the TechLudd meet-up that Anton Mannering arranged there. Nialler9's latest podcast (episode 18) is just long enough to cover up the wind blast from motorway speeds between Tipperary and Cork. And FIR on my Nokia E90 filled the time on the way back to Cashel. A planning pop-up meant I spent less time in Cork's trendy airport deco hotel than I spent behind the wheel but that's part of the risk you take when you juggle too many things in tight spots on calendars. Nonetheless, the short 45 minutes I spent with the group of 20 attending TechLudd in Cork made the evening worthwhile. I can see why Damien Mulley...

Anton Mannering organised TechLudd Cork last night at the Cork International Airport Hotel. I demoed Tweet Tweet and answered questions about WordPress and some of the plugins I had running on my blog.
Apart from showing off Tweet Tweet I took a few photos too. Pictured below are only some of the people there including (in no particular order): Walter, Bernard Goldbach, Anton, Aileen, Gavin Harkness, James Galvin (who should tweet more about Tweetrush!), Walter Wynne, John Peavoy, Pat Phelan, Ashley Halsall, Robin Blandford and some crazy guy who calls himself Damien.
If you see yourself in one of the photos please leave a comment, and apologies for not getting your name on the night.

I just saw this post by Mike Butcher on Techcrunch UK and thought it was worth a mention. I feel sorry for these guys, they're trying to add value to their service and increase the user experience and all they get is grief for it. It just shows how the net is changing and it's users are becoming more demanding all the time. Because of the valuations being put on the facebooks and myspaces of this world people automatically assume all websites have the capabilities to deal with thousands of e-mails/requests a day, luckily at iFoods we haven't reached the thousands a day yet but we get our fair share. By the way, Mike Butcher of Techcrunch is in Dublin tonight for a Techludd/Techcrunch event in No.4 Dame Lane so if you're interested in stopping by register for it here...

Had a great first Open Coffee in the Digital Depot, Mike Butcher from Techcrunch UK was over and did a quick video of some of the hub startup founders. PutPlace provided the cakes and pastries and despite the weather we had a pretty good turnout.
Will definitely host again.
Hope to see you all at CrunchLudd tonight in 4 Dame Lane....

I run a little networking event called Techludd. For an event we’re doing in Dublin with TechCrunch I decided to try out a new registration method for our meetup with TechCrunch on the 26th of June. Normally we use a comment hack to allow people to say who they are and that they’re coming. While this was fine I like to think I’m open to using a new service to see how it fits. Enter Amiando, a company operating in the same space as Eventbrite in the US. Also in this space is Mobaganda which takes a VERY minimalistic approach.
There are of course plenty of services like this (see Pingg, Socializr, MyPunchbowl, etc.). Mobaganda got started as a conversation between Web developer Jason Stirman and Twitter founder Evan Williams. the...

I want, I want, I want…
I want Paul Campbell to talk to Nick Kelly
Nick Kelly, formerly of The Fat Lady Sings, won a Clio Award (the advertising equivalent of an Oscar) for his Guinness spot “Tom Crean” in 2003. Nick also wrote the Guinness “Quarrel” advertisement which featured the late Mic Christopher’s posthumous hit “Heyday”.
Nick also made the prizewinning short ‘Why the Irish dance that way’.
So then I want them to contact the Groovy Dancing Girl (Irish and living in Dublin)
I want them to make a brilliant new ad for Guinness that will reveal the legendary ‘Anticipation’ as little more than a triumph of choppy editing.
And I want them to do it now…
Press play to see why…

Fantastic night last night at the inaugural TechLudd, big crowd turned up (I’m never good at these estimates, but my guess is at least 70 100 people) Microsoft paid for the beer (big shout out there, thanks Clare and Martha) and Ireland’s current crop of Entrepreneurs provided the entertainment and conversation. Marcus took a bunch of snaps which are now up on pix.ie.
Full marks to Anton and Sabrina for doing all the heavy lifting. Looking forward to the next one already…...

 Born of Fire
When Techludd was first mooted, some hotly demanded it stop before it starts. And protested that the scene is already well enough served. That another event would simply dilute the value of existing events.
All tough statements. Difficult to qualify. That is, unless you have some special way to predict the future.
Nature will find a way
Others countered that the mark of a vibrant scene is to see lots of events launched and lots of events failing, and letting the market pick and choose.
If they need it, they will come
With that, the planning for the event went ahead. A sort of “if they need it they will come” attitude. But it was more than that. It was extended to be more embracing. If they need it. They will tell us what they need. When they come.
When and......
