The City’s Edge: Dublin in Fragments 2 via Dumb Riffs, Jul 9th, 2010 at 14:19

image It’s hard to believe how important Tallaght was to the historical development of Dublin city – at least it was hard to believe something like that when I grew up there. Nowhere seemed further from the dense, decaying streets of the city centre in the 1980s than Tallaght, with its vast and oppressive open spaces threaded with sinister-looking electricity pylons that you could hear a low buzz from when you stood beneath them. Tallaght, with its anonymous industrial estates seemingly dropped in the centre of housing developments – estates that, in turn, seemed to stretch for miles without end. Tallaght seemed like nowhere. Tallaght never seemed part of Dublin, to me. It was distantly flung to the far south-western corner of the city, as if banished from the urban centre for some... Similar posts

TweetypieTuesday via Magnumlady's Blog, May 11th, 2010 at 19:16

image Rescued, originally uploaded by magnum_lady. Well not exactly tweety pie but a bird anyway. I had a lovely day today. I was on my way to meet my friend in Ballymote for a coffee and a chat. On the way I just missed this little bird in the road. I stopped the car, he was dazed so I picked him up and sat him in the car for a while until he perked up. Then I let him back out, I put him on a tree in a field. He chirped at me and flew away With all the excitement of the photo yesterday I forgot to tell you I got an ipod touch. I had birthday and Christmas money so I decided to treat myself…..also HMV were giving away a 25 euro itunes voucher with the ipod touches so that sort of swung it for me. Anyway Lucy has been teaching me how to put music on it and I think it’s great. I... Similar posts

Enough of Harney picking over the nation’s carcass! via Cllr Joe Ryan's Blog, Mar 11th, 2010 at 23:58

image Few Ministers have presided for as long as Mary Harney in the history of the state. She’s spent 12 years in office continuously and add to that the period that she spent as a successful Junior Minister at Environment where she pioneered smokeless fuel. Her senior at the time was Padraig Flynn and the pair were nickname Smog n’ Smug! When Harney transferred to Health in 2004 she told us that she’d bring her business like approach to health and shorten waiting lists, improve services and give us a first class health service. After the latest scandal at Tallaght Hospital she’s no nearer her goal than she was over 5 years ago when she took up the job. In 2005 she said she wanted a 7 year stint to complete her job. Her optimism is groundless, she’s brought us no nearer a better... Similar posts

Lack of debate on HSE means answers to Tallaght Hospital Scandal scarce via The White Board | Senator Alex White, Mar 11th, 2010 at 13:10

image Of course it is ludicrous to suggest that the Minister should be held responsible for not opening particular letters or envelopes in Tallaght hospital. It is nonsensical to suggest it and to the extent that it has been suggested I do not agree with it. However, there is a real issue for political representatives. Because of all the changes that have occurred and the arrival of the HSE on the scene – many on the Government side have made this point – politicians and political representatives generally have been deprived of an opportunity to raise any serious issue or have serious debate, such as that which has been called for in the Seanad or in the Dáil. The Dáil is a Chamber to which the Government is accountable and responsible under the Constitution although it is not as directly... Similar posts

Big wheel keeps on turning via Magnumlady's Blog, Feb 20th, 2010 at 12:07

image Well yesterday we had to go to Dublin for Jono’s check up. I had my list ready about whether he can go swimming, have baths etc. We also wanted to ask about the pain he has in his shoulders and was it normal that he looks slightly hunched again. Of course everything went out the window when we got to see the consultant. He had done an xray of Jono and his spine has started to curve at the top including the rod so he is thinking of extending the spinal fusion up to Jono’s neck. We were really shocked, we just weren’t expecting that. Poor Jono having to go through it all again. Of course now that I’m home I have all kinds of questions that I should have asked. Thankfully there is the scoliosis support website. As always they are a great help. We won’t know... Similar posts

The first day of Spring….. via Magnumlady's Blog, Feb 1st, 2010 at 19:33

image The first day of Spring….., originally uploaded by magnum_lady. As I was driving Lucy to school this morning I heard the radio say it’s the first day of Spring….shame no one thought to tell the weather! It took twenty minutes to warm Bertie up this morning and the roads were very icy. I hope it starts to warm up soon. When I came home I took Andy for his blood test at the GP’s. He has to go to the hospital from now on for his INR check, it makes no difference really as I had to take the blood into the hospital anyway. The car parking at Sligo general is really bad. So difficult to get a space so I parked in town and walked up. All part of my trying to get fit campaign. I’m still doing the wii fit every day as well. I’ve only lost 2kg in two weeks... Cold Christmas via Magnumlady's Blog, Dec 23rd, 2009 at 22:05

image Cold Christmas, originally uploaded by magnum_lady(away). This is today, around -8 last night. Freezing fog today. If it doesn’t clear tomorrow, we’ll be having cat food for Christmas dinner The ‘nursing’ is going OK at the moment. Poor Jono is in a lot of pain, bless him. He can’t seem to get comfortable. It’s early days yet though. At least he has now started eating, he lost a load of weight and he was very slim anyway. I measured him today and he is now 5′6″ so he’s grown over 4 inches due to the surgery. He’s now much taller then me and a little bit taller then Lucy (she’s not impressed!) So anyway to tell you a bit about our time in Dublin. It was the longest week of my life. We travelled up on Monday 14th, the... Similar posts

Good News! via Magnumlady's Blog, Oct 1st, 2009 at 20:07

image Above is the article that was in yesterdays Irish Daily Mail. The photo and interview were done on Saturday when we were at the Hilton Hotel. We were saying that Jono got his out patients appointment just after he was first mentioned in the newspaper. The appointment was today. We got the news that we were hoping for. All being well Jonathan will have his surgery on October 27th! We are all shocked but very pleased and also very apprehensive. It’s a five hour operation and will be carried out in Tallaght Hospital in Dublin. Before then Jono has to have a pre-op assessment which is booked for October 19th. I just want to say a big thank you to the Irish Daily Mail for highlighting Jonathan’s story and also a massive thanks to everyone out there who sent messages of support,... Similar posts

€400 - 1 (one) Goal via Irish Connection UK, Sep 2nd, 2009 at 17:56

image Tallaght-fornia. 20/07/09. The night Cristiano Ronaldo made his Real Madrid debut. He didn't disappoint, but some of his team-mates did to be honest. It took Real Madrid 87 minutes to break down the Shamrock Rovers backline last night in what was to be a heartbraking defeat for the home side. Billed as 'David versus Goliath', I found myself asking two questions... One - Which one was Goliath? and two - Out of the 10,900 spectators, just how many of them will be at the Bohemians game next week?My first question was finally answered three minutes from time when new signing Karim Benzema controlled blissfully from a long ball and slotted home cooley past Rovers keeper Barry Murphy. 40 million? Sure that's only Madrid's bargain bucket! I have to say as a Glentoran supporter I couldn't help but... Similar posts

Jacob’s ends Production in Ireland via Views from the Emerald Isle, May 25th, 2009 at 16:16

image Jacob's, Ireland's famous manufacturer of biscuits, wafers and crackers (and one of the best-known brand names on this island), has ceased producing biscuits at its factory in Tallaght, Co. Dublin yesterday afternoon. As Tallaght was the company's last manufacturing facility in the Republic of Ireland, this means the end of production of our favourite biscuits in our own country. The closure of the plant, which had started production in the 1970s, had been already announced in September 2008, and a gradual wind-down process of production took place since then. However, the closure means that another 220 jobs are lost in Dublin, and in this harsh recession we are in, that.hurts.Jacob's sales, marketing and administration departments, which together still employ about 100 people, will remain... Short visit to Rua Red via Virtual Existence, Mar 31st, 2009 at 22:24

image Housewarming// Rua Red, Tallaght// until May 2nd This afternoon, during a short visit to Tallaght, I stopped by ‘Rua Red‘ arts center, situated in the Square. Funnily enough, ‘Rua Red’ is also situated right beside where the Red Luas line ends! The building is impressive from the outside,  red and orange panels provide a more colourful offering on architecture than the surrounding highrise apartment blocks and council offices that create a somewhat dull landscape. “Red… is the fiercest note, it is the highest light, it is the place where the walls of this world of ours wear the thinnest and something beyond burns through.” G.K  Chesterton (quote at the opening of the Robert Smithson’s text on “the Spiral Jetty”, 1972) I had... Not accountants but wannabe politicians via Maman Poulet, Mar 19th, 2009 at 07:25

A few weeks ago Fianna Fáil uploaded a video of local election candidates. I only got round to watching it on Monday. The first thing that struck me - Poor Dermot Flanagan from Tallaght South - someone didn’t check the caption spelling! (Dermot was one candidate who caught my attention at the Ard Fheis, he can actually give a speech without keeping his eyes stuck on a script.) Dermot likes the word local also - wonder will he swap it for place names in his ward, the way Charlie ‘Tallaght’ O’Connor does. Does anyone in Fianna Fáil wear a jumper or a hoodie or an anorak? These candidates look like people who work for KPMG (or used to!) Ok I’m going to say it now and it might stick. Stepford Candidates...... Similar posts

Platform one via UisceBots Blog, Feb 6th, 2009 at 06:50

image Platform One, a new open writers forum, with the help of Tallaght Community Arts (that's their logo above) will have an open reading performance session this coming Saturday. There'll be music, poetry and short stories from a wide range of local writers. The forum aims to provide a walk-in one-stop space for reading, sharing work and exhanging ideas amongst writers and other artists. I'll be reading a few things myself on the night. You should try and get along. It's part of the open day at Tallaght Arts Centre, a 'New state of the Ort' facility right at the end of the Luas line. You'll get to have a look at the whole space if you drop by. Just don't write curses on the toilet doors. It's an hour long event - starts at 7, finishes at 8. For anyone wondering what's happened to the... Similar posts

Arson Attacks on Garda Stations via Views from the Emerald Isle, Oct 15th, 2008 at 16:10

image A Garda station in southern Connemara has been extensively damaged in a suspected arson attack. The fire at Carna Garda station (photo left) in Co. Galway broke out at around 10 p.m. last night.About two weeks ago windows of the station had been smashed during the night, but no further damage was done at that time. There were also some other acts of vandalism reported in the area in recent weeks.Only five days ago, Blarney Garda station (photo right) in Co Cork was also badly damaged by another fire. Gardaí are attempting to establish a motive for both attacks, but is not suspected that they are connected.Arson attacks on Garda stations are fortunately not occurring frequently in Ireland, but there has been a considerable number of such crimes in recent years.Last year, on March 22nd,...
