SubbaCouture #1 via blaubushka, May 25th, 2010 at 02:53

image So before we begin exploring the various subcultures to be celebrated on June 2nd with a night of SubbaCouture at Freakscene Cork, be sure to read the inspired post by Blaubushka soul mate Laura Whiston over at Whisty Blogs Dublin Fashion.********Punk*********The earliest form of punk rock began as a garage rock revival in the northeastern United States in the late 1960s with its blazing music scene set alight in New York City between 1974 and 1976. This was almost instantly followed by its twin movement in London. This subculture was carried by the nihilistic lyrics of the Sex Pistols and further developed by the likes of Discharge, The Clash and The Ramones. I myself am and will also be a Ramones girl, to the point of having 'Ramone' on a list of baby names.Street... Similar posts

AFI - Crash Love via Too Famous To Get Fully Dressed, Sep 23rd, 2009 at 20:38

image I had a bad feeling about this record, coming as it did after the so-so Decemberunderground. It didn't make much of an impression at first, but after listening to it more closely, Crash Love turned out to be a big step up from the last record. 'Beautiful Thieves' may wind up being one of my favourite AFI songs to date. From my review:To call Decemberunderground an existential crisis might be a bit of an over-statement, but its effects were not lost on the band. Despite broadening their appeal substantially, Decemberunderground divided fiercely both the band’s casual and hardcore fan base. The Despair Faction will always keep the faith, but, even so, many were disillusioned by the changes. Though they’ve never explicitly admitted it, Jade and singer Davey Havok created the side-project... Similar posts

BATS Album Stream via Too Famous To Get Fully Dressed, Sep 10th, 2009 at 00:49

image Good bit of work went into this one, but it was well-worth it in the end. A great debut record from a great Irish band: stream Red In Tooth & Claw in its entirety at Sputnikmusic.Virulent post-hardcore combines with the ruthless pursuit of scientific progress on Red In Tooth & Claw, the debut full-length record of Irish five-piece BATS. Emerging from the exciting stable of young acts at underground Dublin label the Richter Collective (Adebisi Shank, Marvins Revolt), BATS make their motives crystal clear from the outset: the first three songs tackle, in turn, theoretical physics, exploding stars and frontal lobe epilepsy, and that's just the warm-up. Might wanna make a pot of coffee before getting into this one.Typical influences like Pixies, Circle Takes The Square and Don Cab are easily... Similar posts

Frank Turner on illegal downloading via Too Famous To Get Fully Dressed, Aug 27th, 2009 at 10:04

There's something eminently lovable about Frank Turner.First of all, he's a protest singer, but he's not a socialist- a fact he is at pains to point out given the relative oddity of his position. Second, he regularly gets involved in slagging matches with his- how shall I put it?- leftier internet fans. Third, he's actually a pretty good musician. Oh, and he knew Prufrock before he was famous.Turnere's latest foray into pissing off his fans/friends/everyone was a seemingly innocent re-tweet of a hilarious (and insightful) satirical article in the Daily Mash poking fun at file-sharing proponents that quickly got more heated.Later, he gathered his thoughts and wrote this rather measured refutation of the increasing numbers who not only refuse to pay for music, but don't even understand why... The Clash – London Calling (CBS, 1979) via nick thinks..., Aug 18th, 2009 at 12:22

image Nick: I saw someone walking round in a Clash t-shirt the other day, and I thought ‘I have no idea what they sound like, I know who they are but….’ they’re very in the tradition aren’t they? wow, weird that I picked to do them today so, van Vliet synchronicity. ….something like that. when is this from? 1979. it’s a bit Rolling Stones…. yeah? yeah, bit sharper, less sophisticated, rougher. but I like it. I don’t know if this is a term that works with music at all but it comes across as very honest. I think that’s something they were aiming for, well, authenticity. that’s why it’s instantly sympathetic. mind you, I did hear the forbidden word in one of the earlier songs. my *baby* drove up in a brand new cadillac? no no... This is the bands fourth time playing in Dublin in the last 4 years and I enjoyed it as much as the last time I caught them which was at The Electric Picnic 2 years ago. New songs were introduced last night which made me a happy punter as well as "the hits" including, Must Be The Moon and the rapturous Heart Of Hearts. The Thermals via Culch.ie, Apr 17th, 2009 at 12:00

While everyone else was off buying EP tickets this morning I was instead hearing news of The Thermals upcoming date in the Academy on June 19th and buying my ticket (€13.60 from Ticketmaster - bargain!). Having been underwhelmed with the line-up for both of the major music festivals I’m instead spending my cash on all the small Dublin summer gigs instead. I’m really looking forward to finally seeing The Thermals live as they’re one of the only bands that succeeds in satisfying my occasional craving for really wonderful low-fi grunge, but these guys have certainly been given a lot of other labels “indie/alternative/post-pop-punk rock” for instance. I’ve been listening to their last album “The Body, The Blood, The Machine” ever since they... Similar posts

Mr. Lightweight - Pop Punks Heavyweights via Note Media, Feb 26th, 2009 at 14:08

LUX GONE TO THE EXTERIOR via Dublin Opinion, Feb 7th, 2009 at 08:30

image Donagh is correct in pointing out on a recent post of his that I am the morbid banshee rock obit specialist of this blog. This weather, it seems that the greats are passing away on a weekly basis. Latest in the list I found out about last night through my very own Poison Ivy - Lux Interior, frontman of the Cramps, who died in Glendale, California, last Wednesday. Appreciations can be found over here NME -Hamish MacBain and here Pitchfork - Tom Breihan Having only ever seen the Cramps in the ‘flesh’, as it were, once - I’m not overly surprised that Lux’s body has given up at the relatively young age of 62. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a frontman (or woman) put as much into a performance as that night in the SFX (around the time that unemployment in... Similar posts
