CORK Sinn Féin this morning (Wednesday, July 28th) launched a major new initiative aimed at tackling the growing housing crisis across Cork city. There are now more than 8,000 families on the housing waiting list in Cork which has grown by more than 1,000 in just two months.
“Let’s End the Wait” aims to make tackling the housing crisis a top priority in Cork and outlines a number of actions that can be taken now, at a local level, to make a difference.
“Let’s end the wait” is a comprehensive campaign with a strong focus on local housing needs in Cork.
The campaign will focus on several core issues:
A charter for social tenants
Help for those facing negative equity
Clearing the waiting list
Reforming the housing list

THE Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Fine Gael TD Bernard Allen has warned that Ireland is facing repossession “disaster” if steps are not taken now to help homeowners who are struggling to pay their mortgages.
Deputy Allen said, “The Master of the High Court has confirmed that 600 new cases of repossessions have come before the courts in just one month. This is a clear that the banks are now willing to move on repossessions following the NAMA bailout.
“This is happening despite the fact that the IMF has confirmed that Irish banks now have sufficient financial resources to help the most distressed home-owners restructure their debts to avoid repossession.
“With so many people struggling to keep up with mortgage payments it is vital that action is taken...

BUSINESS organisations in the Cork region which include Cork Chamber, IBEC – Cork, Cork Business Association and the VFI Southern Branch today strongly welcomed the recent publication of the Local Government Efficiency Review Group, noting that many of the cost saving recommendations if implemented swiftly have the potential to help reduce the burden on local government funding, of which the business community has long been the funder of “last resort”.
According to Ger O’Mahoney, President of Cork Chamber, “The report through its 106 recommendations has identified efficiencies and other savings of €511m for the local government sector. It is now critical that Minister John Gormley TD steps up to the plate and sets about implementing these recommendations as a matter of...

LABOUR Party Senator for Cork South-West, Michael McCarthy, has said that news of the imminent closure of Millbrook Hospital in Bandon is a big disappointment for the town.
Senator McCarthy said, “The closure of Millbrook Hospital highlights the importance of the much promised extension to the Community Hospital. There is a great shortage of beds and space at the hospital at the moment. This closure will put added strain on the already scarce resources.
“The HSE must now sanction the funding for this extension to enable this hospital to cater for its population. We must not forget that Bandon is the largest town in West Cork but bed capacity is wholly inadequate.
“It is now time for the HSE and the government to deliver immediately on its Primary Care Strategy for...

THE water disruption experienced by large parts of Cork this week, as a result of a break in the Inniscarra water main, is further evidence of the pressing need for investment in water infrastructure and for a new semi-State water company to take responsibility for our water supply, according to Fine Gael Cork South Central Senator Jerry Buttimer.
“Large parts of Cork were left without access to water in their homes and businesses yesterday owing to major damage to the Inniscarra water main. The problems associated with restoring supply to some areas meant that residents were forced to draw their water from tinkered supplies set up locally.
“While the disruption was nowhere near the scale seen following last year’s floods, the continual interruption in Cork’s water supply points...

 Ciaran Lynch
LABOUR TD Ciarán Lynch has accused the Government of planning to outsource social housing provision.
“As we scrutinise in detail the provisions put forward yesterday in the Infrastructure Investment Priorities, it is clear that the Government is hell bent on outsourcing the provision of social housing to their developer pals.
“It seems that councils will be under instruction neither to buy nor acquire any local authority housing for the foreseeable, a radical policy shift which has come about by stealth and about which there has been virtually no public debate.
“According to yesterday’s document, current and future housing provision is to be met almost entirely by leasing existing housing stock from builders and developers. “The strategy first came to light over a...

LABOUR Party Senator for Cork South-West, Michael McCarthy, has expressed his concern at the likelihood that Cork County Council is to discontinue its refuse collection service.
Senator McCarthy said, “The loss of this service will have an impact on a massive number of people. Those on social welfare, the elderly, those with disabilities will all now be left to the mercy of the ‘market’.
“I realise that this service has been loss making and is experiencing difficulties but I believe that it is a vital service for the community. I would resist any moves toward privatisation and I would call on Cork County Council to re-think this strategy.
“Above all else, I would urge that the less well off in our community be considered in any plan to sell off refuse...

Deputy Clune added that, with the Government refusing to reform third level funding, Ireland is set to lose out badly.
“You can’t build a smart economy or provide high tech jobs by slashing the funds that go toward building facilities to train the next generation of Irish researchers.
