Showing as part of the GAZE festival, And Then Came Lola is a blast of a film, some much-needed fresh air on a somewhat stifling (for women anyway) programme. This is what happens when, after years of some great lesbian films but mostly awful lesbian films, the viewers get involved. Ellen Seidler and Megan Siler were obviously watching films and thinking “Jesus, I could do better than that!” They were right, they can. And Then Came Lola is a fast-paced, slick comedy that will give your funny bone a good workout. Inception is definitely the best movie I've seen in the last five years. I find dreams very interesting, so I knew I'd like it, but I couldn't have anticipated how truly amazing it would be. It reminded me how much I love movies. And also how much I used to love Leonardo DiCaprio. When I was twelve years old, Titanic was released, and my obsession with Leo began. My friends and I were all in love with him, but I had the most in common with him. See, I'd bought his unauthorised biography, and was stunned by the amount of similarities between us. We were both Scorpios. We both played keyboard. We both spoke 'some' German. We both liked acting. For my twelve-year-old self, this was enough to convince me that we were meant to be together. So I had a go at trying to edit my own video for once. Took a good twenty minutes to get this together, and it was only an eight second clip. But it’s another step along the road towards an Oscar. It’s Shane o’Connor again, a little unlucky this time, but it’s a nice wave so I thought I’d share. Let me know if there’s any noticeable difference in Quality for you. However, for fans of a certain type of cinema, the real sangreal has always been a collaboration between two strong, serious, and singular Frenchwomen in director Claire Denis and actress Isabelle Huppert respectively. Here, in this tense and forbidding depiction of a post-colonial African state, that quest has come to a successful end.
