Ubuntu Hour Limerick via Czajkowski, Jul 28th, 2010 at 21:58

image I moved back home to Limerick from Dublin and I thought I’d start up an Ubuntu hour here.  On Thursday 29th July, we’re going to have the first one down here. The idea of an Ubuntu hour is to just chat, meet new people, put a face to a name and talk about Ubuntu, Open Source, other distros what ever you really fancy.  Just makes a change from doing it via mailing list/IRC.  Everyone is welcome, you don’t have to be a user of Ubuntu. We encourage discussion and interaction, but if you just want to come along and listen you’re more than welcome. You can sign up using the LoCo Directory WHEN: Thursday 29th July WHERE: Absolute Hotel Limerick  in the Bar area TIME: Pop in from 6pm onwards... Similar posts

Essence Of Ireland via The Daily Spud, Jul 27th, 2010 at 23:52

image So, if you could capture Ireland in a single mouthful, what would that mouthful be? I think that Pádraic Óg Gallagher, he of the Boxty House, may have captured it perfectly when he drizzled Connemara Peated Single Malt Whiskey over smoked Irish salmon. Connemara peated single malt whiskey and Irish smoked salmon It’s like a modern interpretation of a John Hinde postcard. It tastes like you’re sitting close to, or possibly in, a turf fire, an experience that certainly used to go with the territory in rural Ireland. Classic John Hinde Postcard: Collecting Turf from the Bog, Connemara, Co. Galway, Ireland(image from www.johnhindecollection.com) The marriage of whiskey and salmon was only the beginning, though. It was the opening dish on the menu for the gala Saturday banquet... Similar posts

But how can they teach me to run faster? * via ManicMammy's Blog, Jul 27th, 2010 at 18:58

Bandon Athletic Club Summer Camp for Children The beginning of the school summer holidays saw my middle three children eager to do something energetic. Some of their pals were doing the Bandon Athletic Club Summer Camp so that’s the activity they selected. It was held in the Bandon Grammar school grounds which was great as in addition to outdoor running track and facilities, there was access to indoor halls should the weather turn inclement. The three aged 5, 6 and 8 years old had a brilliant week. They really enjoyed the range of activities which included: sprints long jump high jump relays javelin hammer throw discus shot putt The camp cost €65 for the first child and €50 for each subsequent sibling which I rate as good value for money. It ran from 10am to 2pm, Monday... Similar posts

Cork’s Pink Auction in support of Action Breast Cancer - Donation of prizes wanted! via Irish Craft Update, Jul 26th, 2010 at 23:50

This coming October, we are holding the first ever Pink Auction in Cork City. The auction will bring together many people with two goals —- to promote creative textiles in Ireland and to raise money for Action Breast Cancer, a programme of the Irish Cancer Society. People within the community as well as around the country are participating by making and donating handcrafted creative textile items to be auctioned off. The event will take place at The Imperial Hotel on Sunday, 10th October 2010.  We are on Ravelry, Facebook, Twitter, and have our own blog. The more support we can get the more we can do and the better it is for breast cancer awareness. Our flyer is at the top of this page of our blog: http://pinkcork.blogspot.com/p/media.html   The Pink Auction... Similar posts

dotconf via iQ Blog, Jul 26th, 2010 at 16:12

image Last Thursday’s dotconf at the National College of Ireland was packed (and not just because it was free). I was lucky enough to score a last minute ticket - here are some of my highlights: Wisdom in the Crowd - Mark Little, Storyful So what is Storyful? Mark didn’t give away all the answers, but instead started with familiar territory: how the quantity, quality and immediacy of news sources has changed with the advent of social media. Where journalists once had to go digging for information, the new challenge is now curation - how to extract the real story from all the layers of information out there. This is the essence of Storyful - making news from noise. Mark encouraged everyone to stop thinking about gadgets/apps and to start thinking about process as a means for... Similar posts

Bingo! Chatroulette Party with Heidi Konnt Cums Highly Recommended! via Culch.ie, Jul 26th, 2010 at 11:25

image The bible of psychiatry, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV (the DSM, currently in its fourth edition) classifies voyeurism as a psychosexual disorder. It is defined in the manual as the practise of looking at “unsuspecting individuals, usually strangers, who are naked, in the process of disrobing, or engaging in sexual activity”. Now, exempting the “unsuspecting individuals” part, Chatroulette must be the biggest forum for voyeurs known to man. And it’s just a mouse-click and a webcam configuration away folks! But what do the compilers of the DSM know anyway? They have a long and chequered history of “disorder” classification; homosexuality was only declassified in 1973, back in the sixth revision of the second edition of the manual. What is and... Deep Dive Boo from Dotconf via Inside View from Ireland, Jul 23rd, 2010 at 17:23

I USED A BIG TABLE aboard Citygold service on Irish Rail to reduce an hour of a Deep Dive into Audioboo into a short six-minute session. In the clip (play it above or below), Mark Rock talks about both the origins and evolution of the social audio service, Peter Donegan talks about brooding hens, and I offer some segues to introduce questions from the audience. The Deep Dive sessions (workshops) were better value than the speaker sessions at the dotconf. The 90-minute beer and cake networking after the day's proceedings was exceptional. Irish Boosters via Inside View from Ireland, Jul 22nd, 2010 at 09:58

image WE'RE TAKING IRISH VOICES into a Deep Dive session at #dotconf in the National College of Ireland today and have included Anthony McGuinness (at left) as cover art for the session. The eight-minute audio snippet that runs from the embedded Audioboo player below is a quick cross-section of audio created and shared by different voices across Ireland. Audioboo is a simple and elegant first step into social audio for those who wish to leverage high-quality sound in local environments. Several people are using Audioboo for interesting things, including local reports from meetings, eureka moments, audio diaries and third level assessments. In Tipperary Institute, Audioboo has enabled me to increase the sophistication and frequency of student work. I'm looking forward to learning how others... Similar posts

Kilkenny Arts Festival 6 – 15 August 2010 via Culch.ie, Jul 21st, 2010 at 10:30

image The Kilkenny Arts Festival is due to start on 6th August next in Kilkenny, marking the beginning of a 10 day festival of Bertie Bassetts – All Sorts! This is the 37th year of the festival and the maturity of the festival shows in the numerous, wide-ranging and quality acts they have lined up for 2010. To make things easier, the festival has been separated into 9 different strands – that’s nine varieties of ways in which you can be entertained! Wired – a musical exploration. According to curator Matthew Nolan, this strand features one of the best live acts performing in Ireland at the moment, And So I Watch You From Afar. Click here to view the embedded video. Getting Ready for Dotconf via Inside View from Ireland, Jul 20th, 2010 at 11:17

image IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS about social audio that you'd like answered in a "deep dive" by myself, Peter Donegan and Mark Rock, please leave them as a comment to my blog, on Audioboo, or in the LinkedIn event discussion group. I'm going to show how I digest my own dog food (how I cache and carry audio from different sources), how podcasting has changed from a complex collection of cables, mics and mixers and how social audio is defining important emotive space in our connected world. This is an important revelation for me and the Guardian gives it credence by naming Audioboo's founder as one of the "Media 100" this week. As you might expect, several audio segments will emerge from #dotconf in Dubin on Thursday. It's a hashtag worth listening to. Getting Ready for... Similar posts

National Moustache Day. Get yo ‘tache on! via PunchTheSphinx, Jul 19th, 2010 at 20:29

image Grace just messaged me on Facebook about a lil thing she’s organizing called National Moustache Day. It’s quite simples really! On the 6th of August you’re all invited to get yo ‘tache on by wearing a fake moustache, drawing a snazzy custom moustache on your own face and friend’s faces (Just like after they pass out!) or alternatively I guess, actually having a real moustache. The latter being the most boring option! But it’s not just on the 6th of August! There is a build up to this most illustrious of days! Grace wants you to emblazen yourselves with Moustaches leading up to the day and send the pictures onto her at http://nationalmoustacheday.blogspot.com/. I’ve already grown mine! So you all better ‘tache up fast motherfuckers!... Similar posts
