Draconian Bankruptcy Laws are stopping Irish Economic Recovery via Deirdre Clune, Jul 20th, 2010 at 01:01

Click here for audio thoughts on Irish Bankruptcy Laws or listen using the player below. Skills learned by entrepreneurs who have failed businesses should not be lost to society and Irish draconian bankruptcy laws are stopping economic recovery. Many people today are finding themselves in extreme financial difficulty but entrepreneurial enterprise skills learned by those who have failed businesses should not be lost to society because it is only through their type of investment that we will create employment again and get back to a situation whereby this economy can deliver what is needed for the people of the country. I believe the laws relating to bankruptcy should be changed. They’re draconian. They were developed at a time when we didn’t have such high debt and so many people in... Similar posts

Investment in Third Level Research is Vital but needs Focus via Deirdre Clune, Jul 16th, 2010 at 18:07

Fine Gael Frontbench Spokesperson on Innovation & Research, Deirdre Clune TD, has welcomed the Government’s announcement of the €359 million investment in third level research and innovation. However, Deputy Clune called for the funds to be invested in a focused manner in order to have the greatest possible impact on economic recovery. The announcement of €359 million for research and innovation in the third level sector is welcome news. It is important that such critical investment in the area continues even in the difficult economic conditions that have been allowed to develop. Supporting and encouraging research and innovation in our third level sector is crucial to help Ireland recover from our current economic troubles, and also to be recognised as a country committed to... Young People are the most unemployed and most likely to emigrate via Deirdre Clune, Jul 14th, 2010 at 11:04

Predictions by the ESRI of the number of people to emigrate are frightening but not surprising considering that one fifth of all unemployed are under 25. This morning’s report released by the ESRI is alarming with 120,000 people expected to have emigrated from Ireland in the two years leading to next April. The latest CSO figures show that just over 20% of all unemployed people are under 25, the same people in whom Ireland has invested heavily and who are most likely to leave the country. These people are our greatest assets and now is the time we most desperately need them to help us rebuild our economy and we are doing nothing to support them and give them opportunities here at home. We need new thinking to create jobs and we need cash-flow to assist businesses. We need to have... Similar posts

Cork jobs announcement provides signpost for future via Deirdre Clune, Jul 9th, 2010 at 18:49

Fine Gael Spokesperson on Innovation & Research, Deirdre Clune TD, believes there are lessons to be learned from today’s positive jobs announcement from Eli Lily that they will create 100 jobs in Cork. Today’s announcement by Eli Lily that it will recruit 100 people for jobs in its financial services centre in Cork is welcome news on the jobs front at a time when we desperately need such positive news. Eli Lily is a pharmaceutical company with a proven track record in the Cork region and today’s announcement is a further underpinning of its investment in Ireland. The message from this jobs announcement is that a skilled and well educated workforce with language skills is a major advantage when seeking to attract investment and jobs. Our third level education sector must be... Similar posts

Cuts to social schemes beckons time for change in Government via Deirdre Clune, Jun 28th, 2010 at 15:01

The €80m cuts to social schemes announced today (Monday) are non-sensical and the time has come for us to not only rethink the way we do things, but for a complete change. Cuts to Community Development Programmes will increase the number of people we have unemployed in Cork city, deplete the frontline services we have available to the elderly and the disadvantaged and will serve to further hurt efforts to revive our economic welfare. The announcement of the €80m cuts today (Monday) will directly affect Community Development Projects (CDPs) in Cork funded under the RAPID scheme. These CDPs work in the most disadvantaged and marginalised communities in Ireland. They work with people who experience poverty, social inclusion and inequalities on a daily basis. Crucially, they support,... Similar posts

Investment in Cork Pfizer plants must not be wasted via Deirdre Clune, Jun 22nd, 2010 at 15:08

The IDA have said they are confident “that a buyer will be found for at least some of these facilities” and the government have promised that any new company thinking of taking over the Pfizer plants will be eligible for significant tax breaks and I believe this is very positive news for Cork. Earlier this week I asked the minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation what steps he had take to seek a purchaser for the plants at Loughbeg and Shanbally and he told me that the IDA has said they are confident and ‘any company coming in that will commence a process, of course, will be subject to the 12.5% corporation tax, If it is involved in research, development and innovation, it will be able to obtain the further tax credits that would be available to any multi national or other... Bankruptcy laws must change to encourage enterprise via Deirdre Clune, Jun 4th, 2010 at 11:51

“There is no forgiveness in Ireland for business people who try hard to succeed but end up having to file for bankruptcy,” according to Fine Gael Innovation Spokesperson Deirdre Clune TD. Bankruptcy is viewed in Ireland as the result of money mismanagement or fraud. Little thought is given to the people who have worked hard but seen their businesses fail due to the current recession. Our laws take the same view, and severely penalise people for 12 years after the declaration. Currently if a business person is declared bankrupt, they cannot obtain a loan for more than €630 without disclosing their status as bankrupt. Their assets are automatically vested and they risk losing their family home. Their bankruptcy status is not discharged for 12 years. As Fine Gael Innovation... Similar posts

Pfizer decision will hurt Cork families via Deirdre Clune, May 18th, 2010 at 22:52

Today’s news that Pfizers will cut 300 jobs from their Cork plants in Loughbeg and Shanbally is a real blow for Cork and a great loss for many families and the surrounding communities. The Cork job loss constitutes almost half of all the jobs the company are cutting in Ireland, however it is not new news as concerns had been raised since the announcement of its merger with Wyeth in October 2009. Originally, I questioned the former Minister for Enterprise, Mary Coughlan, on the matter and more recently Barry O’Leary the Chief Executive of IDA and raised concerns that employees of Pfizers were raising with me. Both acknowledged the concern and Mr OLeary told me that there would be pain for Cork in the pharmaceutical area. The products Pfizer’s manufactures at its Loughbeg plant is... Similar posts

Pfizer job losses a real blow for Cork via Deirdre Clune, May 18th, 2010 at 16:05

DEPUTY spokesperson for Enterprise Deirdre Clune TD (FG) has expressed her disappointment at the announcement by Pfizers this afternoon to cut 300 jobs at its plants in Loughbeg and Shanbally. I had heard about the possibility of job losses at Pfizers some time ago and questioned Barry O’Leary, CEO of the IDA. He told me that “in terms of the pharmaceutical industry, from the Cork perspective there will be some pain given the mergers and acquisitions taking place. Its so sad to hear that it has come through so soon for Cork. This fall out is terrible news for the workers but also for their families and their communities. Already we have 44,000 people unemployed in Cork and this news comes as a further blow to the area. What we need is real investment in the area and a commitment... Similar posts

Mathematica Policy Research: Evaluating the US Jobs Recovery Programmes via Geary Behavioural Economics Blog, May 15th, 2010 at 23:22

Another useful document from Mathematica Policy Research setting down principles on how to evaluate the jobs programmes rolled out under the Recovery Act in the USThe purpose of this white paper, provided as the final deliverable product of the pre-design study, is to provide guidance to DOL as it assesses potential methodologies for evaluating each grant. The purpose of this white paper is not to recommend a single methodological approach as the best way to evaluate these grants, and it does not make such a recommendation. Rather, it explores the advantages and disadvantages of different methodological approaches so that DOL can consider its options for proceeding with an evaluation of these... Similar posts

The Irish employment scene in 2015 via Career Moves, Apr 23rd, 2010 at 11:05

image Image by Kevin Grocki via Flickr Whether you’re a job-seeker looking for the perfect position, an employer seeking the best talent, or a recruitment professional who’s job it is to bring the two together, keeping yourself abreast of current and future trends in the Irish labour market is an important element of the recruitment process. In March the Irish employment and training agency FÁS and the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) published their 13th annual joint report in the manpower forecasting series: "Occupational Employment Forecasts 2015", including full medium-term forecasts of the sectoral and occupational structure of the Irish labour market. Here’s a summary of the key changes they predict in Ireland’s labour market between now... Similar posts

Ireland needs secure & viable energy supply via Deirdre Clune, Apr 22nd, 2010 at 10:31

Speaking in the Dáil debate on Energy Security this week, Fine Gael Innovation Spokesperson Deirdre Clune TD outlined why security of supply and economic viability must be central to Ireland’s future energy policy. Security of supply and economic viability are not mutually exclusive when developing energy policy. An energy policy that addresses the need for security, and meets any price impact analysis, can make Ireland more energy self-sufficient while also improving Irish competitiveness. The past week has brought home to us all how vulnerable we are as an island nation. We do not want to be exposed to energy shortages. Since we are a nation that is almost entirely dependent on fossil fuels, most of which is imported from overseas, we need to change our strategy. We need to focus... Similar posts

Abtran jobs announcement a positive development for Cork via Deirdre Clune, Apr 12th, 2010 at 17:40

Cork TD and Fine Gael Innovation Spokesperson Deirdre Clune described the announcement of 300 jobs in Abtran as a positive development for Cork. The announcement from Abtran that it will invest €3.5 million in research and development at its offices at Curraheen Road and the Model Farm Road which will have the potential to create 300 new jobs is a positive development for the Cork area. The jobs that Abtran will create in Cork will be based on investment in business services one of the areas that it is vital that we focus on if we are to lift Ireland out of the current economic problems we face as a country. Cork has been badly hit over the last two years with unemployment in the county jumping from 19,177 in March 2008 to 44,702 in March 2010. The announcement of 300 jobs in Cork is a... Similar posts

Redundancy System may collapse if policy of ignoring the problem continues via Deirdre Clune, Apr 6th, 2010 at 16:45

Figures released to me in the Dáil shows that the Government has almost lost control of the redundancy payment system under the weight of new claims. The new Minister for Enterprise, Trade & Innovation, Batt O’Keeffe must breaks with the policy of his predecessor, Mary Coughlan, and accepts that a serious problem exists and starts to tackle it. In 2009 the Redundancy Payment Section was seeking the recovery of €78.7 million. In 2009 the Department successfully recovered just €3.6 million. The Department’s response also reveals that • €336 million was paid out by the Department in 2009 when it processed 50,664 redundancy claims up 70% on 2008. • In 2005 €149 million was paid out on redundancy by 2007 this had increased to €183 million and by 2009 €336 million....
