200,000 still unregistered in NI via O'Conall Street, May 6th, 2009 at 09:44

Almost 200,000 people in Northern Ireland will lose their right to vote in the European Parliamentary Elections on June 4 if they do not register before May 19, according to the most recent figures available. With less than a month to go before the elections, up to 15% of eligible voters have still not yet added their details to the electoral register, the data shows.  Those aged between 18 and 24 or people who had moved house recently account for the majority of those missing from the list. Not unsurprisingly South Belfast, the home to many of our third level students, tops the non registered table with 67.1% of the eligible electorate on the register. . The other constituencies break down as follows: BELFAST EAST   81.2% BELFAST NORTH   82.1 BELFAST SOUTH   67.1 BELFAST... Discouraging clientelism via Irish Election, Feb 27th, 2009 at 13:47

We don’t discuss the topic of electoral reform here on Irish Election, so I thought I’d throw out some crazy ideas I’ve had on how we can reform the process to fix some of the endemic problems in our system of government. Ireland is a country of just over four million people, with a parliament consisting of 226 members in total, with 166 members in the the lower house and 60 in the upper, so for a nation of our size, we’ve a disproportionally high number of public representatives for a country our size. The constitution places upper and lower limits on the number of representatives in the lower house in article 16.2.2, specifically one representative for every 20,000 to 30,000 of the population. The use of electoral constituencies is implicit in the language of... Similar posts

Of course, you can consult the paper version at places like your local library, Garda station or County/City/Town Council...... Similar posts

Register to Vote via Irish Election, Oct 22nd, 2008 at 17:37

image Labour’s Cllr Dermot Lacey notes over on his blog that Dublin City Council have started their voter registration drive for the new electoral register.  Nice posters, which include messages in English, Irish, Chinese and what is presumably Polish, are up in Smithfield and other areas with high numbers of people who don’t have English as a first language. I’m sure Dermot is particularly eager for those in Pembroke-Rathmines Ward to register, of course! The actual poster is below the fold (don’t want to break the front page). Register to Vote via Cllr Dermot Lacey, Oct 22nd, 2008 at 17:28

image It’s that time of year again - the Electoral Register is being prepared.  At Dublin City Council, we’ve come up with a poster to encourage those who may not have been born here, but still have a right to vote, to register. DCC - register to vote As readers may or may not know, anyone can vote in Local Elections in Ireland, regardless of nationality.  The only requirement is to be normally resident here.  So, get on to CheckTheRegister.ie and make sure you’re ready for June’s Local Elections.  (Especially those of you in Pembroke-Rathmines...... WORK AND NATIONALITY IN IRELAND: CENSUS 2006 via Irish Election, Jul 19th, 2007 at 01:01

(All figures available from the Central Statistics Office website, here. This is about as definitive as you can get. The census figures show an Ireland that is undergoing huge change, but not quite in the way we have been told. First of all, the actual number of non-nationals employed in construction challenges the “common sense” view [...]... Similar posts

What a mess via The Honest Hack, Jun 1st, 2007 at 17:27

As our thoughts turn to the long weekend and memories of election mayhem begin to fade, more and more stories are beginning to surface about people across the country being denied their right to vote on Election Day.I have heard first hand stories from several people who believed they were on the register, and checked that they were before voting, only to turn up at their local polling station and find they were not on the list.Speaking to politicians who attended various polling stations on the day there seem to have been dozens of people at each, not appearing on the register. There are cases of people receiving multiple polling cards while people in the same homes received none. Other cases have seen people removed from the register after voting in the same area for 20 or 30 years.I... Similar posts

Rock The Vote is an absolute failure via Irish Election, May 22nd, 2007 at 11:30

(Originally posted on AdamMaguire.com) I’ve had more than a passing interest in politics for many years now and I’ve always believed that young people need to engage and be engaged in the larger political discourse. I believe that the main instrument of youth participation within Ireland’s political parties, the youth wing, is actually counter-intuitive and counter-productive [...]... Similar posts

Roche does a U-turn over the electoral register via irish election build-up, Jan 16th, 2007 at 12:26

image November 23, 2006  Clearly Minister Roche is under pressure over the new electoral register. I know from my experience that there are major problems with the new system. i have been on the register for manys a year now and a woman called to the door a few months back to check the names for the register. They all seemed correct however when I checked the register online I wasn’t there. Go figure. So I had to send away a letter to get myself and the family back on. He announced yesterday that he was extending the ammount of time for return of electoral forms by two weeks. On ‘the last word’, he said the reason was because some of the county councils have been slow to process the forms. Yeah...... Similar posts

Minister Roche and the missing Kildare voters via irish election build-up, Jan 16th, 2007 at 12:40

image November 25, 2006  Minister Dick is in more hot water over the electoral register. It can out today that he refused funding to Kildare to implement the new register and now they are having trouble. Labour have come out saying the register in Kildare is a “disaster”. The facts are * Kildare County Council was one of only three councils to formally ask for an extension of the deadline for the completion of register. * One Labour TD was deleted from the register and another was listed at the wrong address. * The town of Celbridge has apparently seen a disproportionately high number of deletions. * The majority of residents in some estates have reportedly been crossed...... The age of consent, should vote via Irish Election, Dec 11th, 2006 at 09:00

Here is a novelty, if the decision on the age of consent should be lowered, why not let the citizens most affected by the decision be allowed to vote on the subject. Why not lower the voting age to 16 and put the decision up to the people. That would let the TD’s and [...]... Similar posts

Seanad to Become Even More Undemocratic via Irish Election, Oct 20th, 2006 at 12:49

A report from today’s Irish Times states that the Government has refused a request from Senator David Norris to take legal steps to ensure that over 700 graduates of Trinity College, who were disenfranchised because of a misplaced file, can be allowed to vote if there is a Seanad election before June of next year. Dick Roche just can’t do boundaries via Irish Election, Sep 9th, 2006 at 16:46

Four months after a survey carried out by members Sinn Féin in Limerick, revealed that the residents of three large estates immidiately north of the Limerick City/County border, would prefer to be within the city limits, there seems to have been little or no movement on the boundary issue. Sinn Féin’s representative and city councillor, Maurice [...]... Similar posts
