200,000 still unregistered in NI via O'Conall Street,
Almost 200,000 people in Northern Ireland will lose their right to vote in the European Parliamentary Elections on June 4 if they do not register before May 19, according to the most recent figures available.
With less than a month to go before the elections, up to 15% of eligible voters have still not yet added their details to the electoral register, the data shows. Those aged between 18 and 24 or people who had moved house recently account for the majority of those missing from the list.
Not unsurprisingly South Belfast, the home to many of our third level students, tops the non registered table with 67.1% of the eligible electorate on the register. . The other constituencies break down as follows:
BELFAST EAST 81.2%
BELFAST NORTH 82.1
BELFAST SOUTH 67.1

Discouraging clientelism via Irish Election,
We don’t discuss the topic of electoral reform here on Irish Election, so I thought I’d throw out some crazy ideas I’ve had on how we can reform the process to fix some of the endemic problems in our system of government.
Ireland is a country of just over four million people, with a parliament consisting of 226 members in total, with 166 members in the the lower house and 60 in the upper, so for a nation of our size, we’ve a disproportionally high number of public representatives for a country our size.
The constitution places upper and lower limits on the number of representatives in the lower house in article 16.2.2, specifically one representative for every 20,000 to 30,000 of the population. The use of electoral constituencies is implicit in the language of...

What a mess via The Honest Hack,
As our thoughts turn to the long weekend and memories of election mayhem begin to fade, more and more stories are beginning to surface about people across the country being denied their right to vote on Election Day.I have heard first hand stories from several people who believed they were on the register, and checked that they were before voting, only to turn up at their local polling station and find they were not on the list.Speaking to politicians who attended various polling stations on the day there seem to have been dozens of people at each, not appearing on the register. There are cases of people receiving multiple polling cards while people in the same homes received none. Other cases have seen people removed from the register after voting in the same area for 20 or 30 years.I...
